We can opt for homeschooling- can they? We can opt for international schools, religious schools, and there is actually very little political indoctrination in our public schools- I have a feeling that isn't the way in China.

You misunderstand. Homeschooling is not an alternative to compulsory education. It's a means of fulfilling the requirement, and it still has to be done (or at least is in theory supposed to be done) to certain educational standards. I know "compulsory" is often connoted as a sinister term, but here's it's completely innocuous.

We were in Beijing months after the Olympics. A couple miles south of the birds nest was an area of extreme poverty - shacks made of whatever could be found. There was a wall made of plywood around it. The outside was painted to look like a park. By the time we were there, sections were already collapsing. We purposely walked through it every time we were going that way. It has changed how I live, give, and treat others. It was also not the poorest people we saw.

It is easy to forget considering they are the second largest economy in the world but China is still counted as a developing country that still faces a lot of challenges, altough sorting them out seem to have taken a back seat to economic prestige.

China being counted as a developing country is an artifact left by decades of international & global trade agreements, not an accurate reflection of its economic situation. Its demography is on par with many developed nations, it just holds on to its developing country status because it gives them an advantageous position of exemption in, for example, climate agreements.

We had an Uber driver who "accidentally" drove us through the projects in New Orleans, that changed my life forever. I cannot believe there is poverty like that in America and we still consider ourselves a first class nation.

Those pockets of extreme poverty are scattered all over the US & the more you travel the more you will find if you care to look.

We have small homeless camps that pop up here and there in our city. I know a number of the homeless people from when I was delivering pizza. If we had spare by-the-slice by the end of the day, we would give it away to the homeless (so long as they weren't aggressive, drunk/high, or rude). To this day, I still take any extra food we have that I know isn't going to get used before the BB date, and I will give it to the local homeless community directly. We all gotta help eachother out as we can.

Obesity shot up in native populations in the US too when their native foods were restricted and the US government replaced it with refined flour and oils.
