I think what happened to him is called high sided. I broke my collarbone the same way during a moto cross race. The bike loses traction for a second, gets it back and snaps back upright tossing you off the bike, it happens so fast.
I recently met a very nice gent whose left arm was just a massive cast with various pins sticking out. And only a thumb visible because the paramedics couldn't find the rest.
All because a idiot made an illegal u-turn in front of his bike. Always remember, kids. Tuck in those fingers and thumbs.
We were thought that fall with the forearms in self-defence. It saves the head and the neck and redistributes weight to a larger surface. It's nice and educational to see it in the wild.
I think a certain number of G forces need to be exerted on the body for it to deploy. The sudden whip/jolt of his lower body upwards might have been what did it.
If you watch bike racing, they are riding them on the very edge. Under acceleration you will see the back wheel sitting a bit as it is getting to the point of breaking free. Under braking again it's dancing and not in line with the front to get the maximum drag on just the 2 wheels. They are in control on the edge of loosing control. Mid corner sometime the line gets crossed. A low side the bike lays down and they slide on their arses, a highside and they get yeeted into next week.
Marc Marquez? For a time, he would crash once or twice a race and still win. Bonkers. That Honda was pushed beyond what it was designed to do...idk. that guy did things that no one could figure out
Not really. He is using as many limbs as possible to slow themselves so their head and torso take as little damage as possible. Looks like he did not even break a single bone. Unless you are being pedantic about the word "perfect" in this situation in which case give it a rest.
I'd agree that it wasn't PERFECT, but the same idea still rings true in that every impact transfers kinetic energy into parts of the body that are less mandatory for the continuation of life. A broken bone? Better than a broken spine. A bruised jointed? Better than a bruised neck. A scrape on the forearm? Better than a gash in the skull. I'm also pretty sure they have some form of training/on-going training on "how to fall without dislocating your spine from your head."
He probably was too hard on the throttle in the turn, and the rear tire lost traction and slide out, and suddenly gripped the road. It's called a High Side, and it's the worst thing to experience as a rider.
It's the absolute worst thing that can happen. The rider is completely at the mercy of physics. Whether or not they get seriously injured after a High Side is up to chance. You don't get to decide where or how you land. Any other manner of accident, including collision, and the rider has some kind of agency in mitigating injury.
Yep a dent and smooth hairless skin on an unfortunately reasonably hairy arse. It was the first point of contact. I was knocked up a bit but young and dumb enough to be more worried about my bike and pride. It would kill me nowadays.
It is. I didn't break my in half but it splintered a huge sliver away. Fortunately just a sling and it slowly filled in the bug gap. They didn't want to do surgery if we could help it.
It absolutely is one of the most painful breaks you can have. And there's literally nothing they can do for it. Just put it in a sling and down pain meds until it heals.
It can be "fixed" with metal screws/pins, but generally it's not used, since it's an invasive surgery, and clavicles usually heal pretty well if just left in peace.
They put me in this figure 8 thing that pulled my shoulders back, then lifted my arms straight up to align the bone as much as possible. Still has a noticeable lump of bone for a decade or so

He knows not to try and stop, but rather to roll with it. *Almost* got away with it.

He's had a lot of practise at this kind of thing. A real lot.

At this point Marquez is mostly metal hardware held together with fragments of bone and flesh.

Gotta love an energetic high-side that doesnt end in major injuries. Luckily my most spetacular high side was into thick mud...

How does the airbag know when to open?

Some of them are attached with a cable. When the cable disconnects, the airbag deploys. Quickly.

Good way to break your leg. Never put a limb out... always prepare to roll, and suffer immense bruises instead of breaks.
castyirons
you can see his suit airbag deploy

Then how did he get into that situation?

By knowing what he's doin!

The point is how he could escape from it

I mean he got injured, he stuck his arms out awkwardly. Like could have been worse obviously but could have been better

He survived and did so relatively unharmed all things considered? I'm not convinced that's the worst that could happen...

Slid for at least 30 feet before I hit the grass.

The upper body portion has an airbag system. You can see the airbag activate on his back about 1-2 seconds in.
