Voodrew here (not pictured, I'm not that handsome) and I'm a life long metalhead.
So… you have purchased tickets to your first HEAVY METAL concert. What should you expect?
Didn’t you hear something about a kid that got killed in a moshpit or something? Or that singer who bit the head off of a bass player? What’s going to happen?
Well, relax, here's your guide to your first metal show.
TL;DR METAAAAAAL!!!!!!!!
First, go get some beer.
Was this picture taken in 2017 or 1986? WHO KNOWS!? Its a metal show!
Now… you’re there, you have just spent $21.00 on 2 Coors lights, and you’re waiting for the show to start. What’s next?
The house lights are up, people are shuffling in, and you have a 90% chance that the venue is playing AC/DC songs over the PA.
This is your last chance to hit the bathroom, but you will probably decide you don’t want to miss the intro. You will regret this later when someone elbows you in the kidney.
Off to the left, you will see the merchandise booth. There you can choose:
1. The shirt with the awesome front design and nothing on the back, or
2. The shirt with the crappy design on the front and the tour dates on the back.
Hmm, do you go with what you like, or go with the one that proves you went to the show? Meh, we’ll come back later.
Around this time, a drum or guitar tech will come out on stage. He’ll strap on the main guy’s instrument and play a little nondescript riff to make sure the sound level is still good. For some strange reason, the crowd will cheer these 8 notes uproariously, just so everyone else knows they are fans of guitars.
Note: At this point in the evening, there is fairly even distribution of all types of people throughout the floor.
If you look around, you will see a pretty wide variety of people, but you will start to realize that most metal shows are populated with 5 basic groups of people. (Of course there are many more, but it wouldn't be as funny without sweeping generalizations.)
5 Types of People You Will Meet at a Metal Show:
Young Energetic Metalhead:
Full of piss and vinegar, the young energetic metalhead is all about the moshing, the aggro and the energy of a metal concert. Nobody understands him (or his choice of music and fashion) and these shows are his opportunity to get some of that frustration out of his system. There is nothing more important to him than (his extremely specific version of) METAL …and all other music should be destroyed. YEMs can usually be found wearing a brand new concert shirt featuring a band that old school metal fans do not recognize or care about.
Sightly Older, Less Energetic Metalhead:
Late 20’s, early 30’s Metalhead who still loves metal shows more than anything, but just doesn’t have the energy he/she used to. Maybe they will jump into the moshpit for the heavy parts of their favorite songs, but they quickly realize they are out of shape. This sad realization leads them back to the outskirts of the pit, where they bang their head comfortably and serve as a barrier to the pit.
Old School Metal Fan, Only Really There for the Music:
These people saw the band 14 times back in 1986 “when they were actually good.” He may not be a huge fan of their newer albums, but he’ll check them out when they come around. Been there, done that, and he has the scars to prove it. Usually wearing an extremely faded concert shirt from the 80s. “You kids go ahead and slam into each other all you want, I’ll be back here with my beer.”
Drunk Frat Boy That is Only There because he Loved that One Song On The Radio:
See that guy over there with the backward white baseball cap, plaid shorts, and sandals? Well, you see, there was that awesome metal song on the radio a few years back that always made him want to drive faster.
Also, when he was on the football team in high school he had a few metal songs on his iPod in-between Eminem and JayZ tracks. They made him feel good when he wanted to get “pumped.” He may be inclined to mosh, but will probably leave with a broken cell phone and missing a sandal.
Sensitive Boyfriends and Girlfriends of Metalheads that Got Dragged to the Show:
Remember when your favorite metal band broke the genre barrier by releasing that radio friendly ballad? Well, your significant other remembers …and they wanted to do something nice for you for Valentine’s Day. They think they remember you liking that band or something. They bought two tickets for you and they will go with you …if you cant find anyone else to go with.
Note: Of course there are many more types of people than this at a typical show. You also have ‘the guy who has been getting drunk in the parking lot for 3 hours before the show starts,’ ‘the slightly overweight and extremely overdressed Goth who is kind of embarrassed to be seen at the show,’ ‘the dude that paid all this money to see the show but would rather watch it through his tiny digital camera window,’ etc. etc. But for the time being, let’s go with these top 5.
SO! Back to the show…
As if a giant picked up the back of the venue and tipped it toward the stage, everyone on the floor squishes into the space of roughly 3 people per square inch. This will probably start to correct itself a little bit during the duration of the first song when people get sick of being smothered.
Note that at this time, 3 out of 5 ‘Sensitive Boyfriends and Girlfriends that Got Dragged to the Show’ are now being trampled and/or uncomfortable squished between sweaty people. This will lead to arguments and the subsequent exit of said group.
Unfortunately, because this is 2017, (and if you are one of the lucky ones to not be squished to death at this point) you will probably view the first song like this.
After the first song is done, most people will be done taking their crappy cell phone pics (and videos they will never watch again) and will buckle in for what the true meaning of a metal show is. Some good ol’ fashion moshing.
“MOSH – mäSH/ verb: moshing 1. dance to rock music in a violent manner involving jumping up and down and deliberately colliding with other dancers.”
Usually around the second or third song, you will see the crowd part into a circle to engage on the beautiful pastime of moshing.
If you don’t want to get hit in any way, move yourself to a place where you are at least 3 people removed from the center of the most pit. Big hits can knock people pretty far back.
If you don’t mind getting hit, put your forearms up and jump in!
The Unwritten Rules of Mosh Pitting
1. If someone falls, pick them up and continue moshing, they would do the same for you
2. If someone gets hurt, help them to the edge of the pit
3. You are moshing, you are not in the last scene of Enter The Dragon. If you accidentally smash someone in the face or hurt someone severely, check on them, give them a pat on the back or something. It is a violent celebration, but it is a celebration, not an excuse to cripple people.
4. If you see a shoe or someone’s glasses, (or something someone needs) grab it and lift it up in the air, someone is looking for it
There are many different types of moshing, usually directly influenced by the sub-genre of the show, but regardless, everyone is there to have fun… don’t be a dick.
You will also see crowd surfers popping up here and there. If they come near you, do what you can to keep them up and WATCH OUT FOR THEIR BOOTS! Crowd surfing patterns are unpredictable and boots meet people’s heads quite often.
Note: If you are over 5 Foot 10 or weigh over 200 pounds, do everyone a favor and don’t try to crowd surf. You’re going to kill someone.
At this point in the show, everyone has settled into place. The moshers are moshing, the crowd surfers and surfing, the band is warmed up and everyone is having a great time.
Until…
Something hard and wet screams toward the center of the mosh pit.
Enter the Gigantic Douchebag Musclebound Shirtless Guy That Comes Out of Nowhere Halfway Through the Show (GDBMSGTCOONHTTS.)
GDBMSGTCOONHTTS somehow found enough time out of his busy schedule of Crossfit Training and low carb intake to come to a heavy metal show. Much to his delight (since he hasn’t had the opportunity to hit people half his size since high school) people are actually pushing each other around ON PURPOSE! And he’s gotta join in, bro!
Throwing all unspoken rules and kindnesses of the typical moshpit, GDBMSGTCOONHTTS wants to put his arms straight down toward his groin area and flex his chest muscles while he spins around the outside of the pit. He then bee lines toward the smallest person he can find and then pushes them to the ground.
This continues until everyone in the pit get sick of his crap and the pit comes to a halt. (See Above Graphic) GDBMSGTCOONHTTS continues like a dreidel on steroids until he realizes nobody wants to play anymore. He then puts his shirt back on and leaves in his Acura, bro.
STAY TUNED FOR ‘Your First Metal Concert: A Scientific Guide, Part 2!’
In which we will discuss such topics as The Wall of Death, Moshing Techniques, how the lead singer will constantly yell at you for being tired (even though you have been moshing for an hour and a half) and clever ways to get closer to the stage! (See Below)
If you dig this one, I'll do up a part 2. I know there are many metalhead Imgurians, what did I miss?
Zat01chi
Also the huge fat guy who is most likely bombed trying to mosh but just keeps falling down and everyone has to help him up.
Mugfan
As someone who always choses the ones with the dates on the back, this hit pretty close to home. Can't wait for Part 2
howdoyouturnthisonagain
Me too, disturbed in Australia was a pretty hard choice.
eusebiusnicomidea
hwardmoon
That drunk frat boy got tossed in the pit
Eohor
One day a large lumberjack almost knocked me out during a moshpit, the guy lifted me on his shoulder, carried me to safety, and then [..]
Eohor
proceeded to pay me a beer. He waited for me to be okay so we could both go back to moshing. He's still a friend today.
Atrus5
This is what metal concerts are all about!!
AlliterationsAreAlwaysAwesome
Dear future me, this has interested me and is worth reading again unlike most of your favorites. This is about metal concerts
BendyBatchCrumblyCakes
Women crowd surf too. It's not an excuse to be a Chester Molester while she passes overhead.
dontcallmeplath
PREACH!
Aislar
god this is so true, was thinking the same. it actually really sucks and makes you feel bad :(
BendyBatchCrumblyCakes
You could always punch the guy. Tis a metal show after all!
Facetimewithme
Chester molester would have made me spit my drink out if I was drinking
BendyBatchCrumblyCakes
He's one creepy sonnofabitch
tummyrubs
To the big dudes who form a protective barrier around the pit: Thank you!!! - 5'2 female
AlexanderSupertramper
How bout the metal concert equivalent to Russian roulette; a random beer being tossed into the crowd, occasionally causing screams of horror
onlyhalfghost
Plastic cup, go ahead. Can or bottle, expect the person next to you to feed you your own arm through your anus, because you deserve it.
KyleBadge
One time at a Pantera show I was crowd surfing, not by choice, and when I got down I had a hoop earring around my pinky. Whoops!!
osbad
I got hit in the head with a Pepsi about 10 minutes before the show even started.
rocknpirates
And it can always be urine... :(
ThePahis
Mention the importance of using ear protection, concerts can really damage your ears and you might develop tinnitus. You do not want that.
Grenther
As a bassist who's had quite some hours standing next to a drummer. It's really important to wear ear protection. I'd be dead if I didn't.
ThePahis
As someone born with tinnitus I feel obligated to tell people about this. Tinnitus has driven many people even into suicide, I was able 1/2
ThePahis
To cope with it simply because I have always had it and thought it was normal. It is a lot worse to develop it +hearing loss. Slowly.
takeasneededforpain
Pic #2 is from the Judas Priest Doc. "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" not sure its floating around the net, I still have it on vhs. Must see!
TheStolenThunder
I'm glad I'm not the only one to recognize the movie. Here's a link to a copy of it: https://youtu.be/FDDnuhbDFeY "priest rulez"
MuffyTheHamburgerSlayer
Old guy here. Was at the Cap Centre for that show, though nowhere near a camera. Back again in '91 for Painkiller tour with 1/2
MuffyTheHamburgerSlayer
triple bill of Testament, Megadeth, and Priest. One of the best shows of my young impressionable life.
nooneexciting
"it wouldn't be as funny with out sweeping generalizations." I like you.
Schnickschnak
Truely a fun read, I enjoyed it @op
Blrp0
Sweeping generalizations and putting specificity above accuracy is the easiest way to seem more insightful than you really are.
nooneexciting
While there is truth to that, OP was going for humor so it all balances out.
Blrp0
trüe, trüe
eagleandy93
*gneralizations* get it right
Voodrew
I noticed two spelling errors after I posted it. I felt horrible, but hopefully the rest of the article makes up for it.
eagleandy93
I shall now endeavor to find the second mistake!
nooneexciting
Oh, darn. I can't believe I made a typo on the internet!
Imgonnatipyouwell
#6 it's so satisfying to see that green dot get blasted back out of the pit.
Voodrew
I'm glad someone noticed that. :)
dontcallmeplath
"will probably leave with a broken cell phone and missing a sandal" made me laugh way too hard- As a fan of heavier music in a college town.
KreigerClone2
No mention of the 1-3 pieces of random confetti that fall from the raftors at some point in the middle of the show?
Voodrew
YES!
Maraak
Side-note: GDBMSGTCOONHTTS has a 20% chance to piss off enough ppl to get beaten like the rented mule of a red headed stepchild.
Maraak
This is followed by a 100% that the GDBMSGTCOONHTTS will frame the even as him winning a fight against great odds against "lamers, bro."
TORGUEFROMPANDORA
Cue uncontrollable wheezing at this description +1
DukePaulAtreides
Holy shit, this is fantastic. Dig the writing style too, @OP, it's descriptive and funny without being too over the top or inaccessible.
KEP2112
I'll be waiting for part 2
Stumpyz
Okay, I need a part 2 for the gifs alone, because that's some dedication for fake internet points. Speaking of, +1 and a fave.
theHatredburrito
In July I'm going to see Iron Maiden and then going to see Volbeat, Avenged sevenfold, and Metallica with my dad. This is helpful.
YesThatWasMe
As am I.
MaterialisticWorm
Volbeat has probably become my favorite over the past few years; have fun!
DarthKratos
metallica's concerts are great but compare to others is pretty chilled now but man you are going to have a blast, have fun.
theHatredburrito
Thanks dude I plan on it!
DarthKratos
CorgisButtsDriveMeNuts
I'd give a kidney to participate in that!!!
TomIsMyDog
Me too! whole-damn-fam is going. We'll see them in San Diego?
worsecompany
Dad rock!
ConfusedFlareon
Avenged Sevenfold are still touring without the Rev???
TriggeredPrivilege
Maiden in Mansfield on the 19th! I'm the older metal head who has to see Maiden to cross em off the bucketlist.
Baconthief1994
Maiden is still really good, you will enjoy that
Lamech777
Can confirm, saw them last year, especially when they play The Trooper
SleuthGluth
I surprisingly liked the new album from Metallica. They went bck to grungier straightforward thrashy metal instead of cookie cutter mainstre
theHatredburrito
I'm hyped as fuck for it, ny dad has been wanting to see them since the 80's but never had a chance.
Baconthief1994
I took my dad to see it too. Old man loved it
unbelievablejustletmein
I'm hopefully gonna be at the ATL volbeat concert
WholesomeCrackwhoresForSale
Saw the Irons a couple years ago, possibly the best show I've been to, even though I got hurt a big (Someone threw a dude in my face). >>>
WholesomeCrackwhoresForSale
>>> and I got a taste of iron in my mouth everytime I got shocked for a while afterwards (metal, ikr). The show got a shit review, but>>>
WholesomeCrackwhoresForSale
>>>Those critics were obviously fucking retarded, cause it was a fucking insane show
Opportunist
Maiden played in Germany with Motley Crue opening. All my (teen) friends went to see Crue, came back Maiden fans! d^___^b
WhoLetThePotatoesOut
I can't convince myself to go to Quebec City only to see Metallica and A7X. I can't, I'm too old to deal with the crowd des plaines.
ColossalTitan
I'm seeing Iron Maiden in June. Ghost is opening up for them for the one concert I'm going to.
theHatredburrito
I think the they open for mine as well
KyleBadge
Friggin love Ghost, really put on a good show, as do Maiden of course. Saw them with Halford and Queensryche when they got back together.
KyleBadge
My first concerts were Air Supply, Billy Idol and The Oakridge Boys. Thank your dad every day.
theHatredburrito
I do, I'm thankful every day for his patience with my bullshit and all the stuff he does for me. He's an amazing man.
CherryScaryLady
I saw Iron Maiden last summer, their concerts are centred around effects and projections, so if your eyes are weak, get close! Amazing tho!
Skabbert
Forgot to mention: how when to pee/get beer during show and how to behave during fake ending/pre-encore
NicomoCosca
I'm caught in a mosh!
littlefuckingrayofsunshine
Thank for this. I've got my first Mettalica concert coming up soon. Should I go with my Brittany Spears tank or my 98° v-neck?
rocknpirates
2 types of people "Mettalica" and "Brittany Spears" but you are both :0 how???
littlefuckingrayofsunshine
I have a daughter that adores Metallica, so i kinda just use her as an excuse.
Carrion114
Clearly the Brit tank
howdoyouturnthisonagain
Brittany.
showershortz
"Barrier to the pit"- that's me. But I'm lookin out for all those girlfriends that got dragged to the show, keeping them safe.
Voodrew
Same here. *high five*
FrankEinstein
As a 6'6 325lb guy i play "Barrier to the pit" and save your stupid ass from dying in the pit because you thought you could handle it (2)
FrankEinstein
wade through the pit pick you up drag you out. All the while deflecting moshers.
showershortz
If I go in, let me die there. I've lived a good life. If it's my time, so be it.
MikePowski
Nailed it. Sincerely, the guy who's in the pit for 5 seconds hoping he doesn't die trying to get closer to the front.
BeauSeremedy
4'11 and I do the same thing. I always just hope I'm low enough not to get hit.
Lamech777
I'm 5'8" and always use the pit to get to the front, but this one time the pit followed me, fun times.
Sylviastout
Part \m/ please
submergedsurrealist
This is so accurate, especially the part about the shirtless guy
TheStonewall
I love when that happens, because I can usually hit that guy hard enough he doesn't wanna play anymore.
Facetimewithme
Well I would hope so being a stonewall and all
TheStonewall
I've used that a couple times playing football
fudgecake212
For someone about to attend their first metal concert in a few weeks, are the unspoken rules of moaning actually followed by most people?
Goose1004
The unspoken mosh rules are absolutely followed at pretty much any kind of show you go to.
dontcallmeplath
As a 120 lbs girl who's spent the last ~10 yrs going to shows, yes. And you'll be pleasantly surprised how many kindhearted people you meet.
Mewmus
i've been in many a mosh pit in my day, people are playing human bumper cars, but all in good fun, no malice intended.
whimsywynn
As a 5'2 girl, moshing ettiquette is very true. I've been knocked on my ass and hauled right back up many times. You will have fun! :)
Zerreth
Yes, Moshing is collision and excitement, not aggressive violence. The moment you see That One Asshole start swinging, back away.
TriggeredPrivilege
That guy usually gets popped good and shrinks away
TheStonewall
For the most part, and a lot of times if someone isn't following the rules, the crowd will put a stop to it. I'll actually pull people out..
TheStonewall
of pits if they're throwing punches or elbows.
Voodrew
If you meant to write "moshing" then yes, absolutely. If you meant to write "moaning" I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds fantastic.
fudgecake212
Thanks for that, and yes I did mean "moshing"! :)
ThisIsTheLastTimeIChangeUsernamesIPromise
I'd say the #1 unspoken rule is to obey the unspoken rule of the mosh pit. If people don't jump eachother/push, don't jump into people/push
ThisIsTheLastTimeIChangeUsernamesIPromise
BUT getting into the moshpit, EXPECT to be jumped into/pushed. It's not always a thing, but it's a common thing
Tinylittlebears
Absolutely! That's the best part about metal shows is you have all these crazy tough people but they are the sweetest people youll ever meet
Atrus5
100% accurate. Met some of the nicest people at metal concerts. Canadian mosh pits are just a bunch of people apologizing awkwardly.
Wafflevore
How about The Trojan Hot Girlfriend that squeaks "excuse me" cutely only to drag 5-6 dudes past and in front of you
Lamech777
Her little harem of green dots that are all above 6' tall
Carrion114
This this this this this
emptykeg
I always point to the bass player and say "What's his name?" If she can answer, she can pass (and bring the dbags with her)
ProfessorSprayAndPray
Man I can't even name the lead singer of 80% of the bands I like. I listen to music. I don't memorize facts.
emptykeg
Well then, no matter how hot you are, I won't let you go in front of me
Voodrew
Oh that is THE WORST. And it's always the 6' 2" guy at the end of that line that ends up standing directly in front of you.
MrRubberBurner
I always feel bad but i can't be shorter! I'm sorry!
Grenther
I haven't ever done that but I'm 6'2" and I am sorry for all the people behind me (altho I'm dutch so I'm just a tiny bit above average)
adobesubmarine
I'm the 6'5" guy that steps on the foot of the idiot trying to pull this off & makes him think it'll snap at the ankle. Checks and balances.
AlwaysTakeABananaToAParty
My man! (Also 6'5" Gatekeeper)

Yea, I've advanced from young enthusiastic mosher to older, very occasional mosher who still likes to be on the sides and help people get

HenryFondle
back into the middle to bounce off of DFB. Mosher - you get the forearm push, nipple high. Douche - I hope you fall.
SleuthGluth
Right there with ya.
SleuthGluth
I usually find the dbag roughing people up and watch for them. The moment they try to shove me I either latch on and take thwm for a ride
SleuthGluth
In the pit slamming them into the biggest guys I see, or side step them to the ground, help them up, and apologise with a smile.
howdoyouturnthisonagain
I'm with you. I usually end up at the wall of the pit stopping 5ft girls getting crushed.
tummyrubs
I always want to tap these guys on the shoulder and thank them
idontknowwhatimdoingandwhoIam
That's why I like to stay at the pit edge! Most guys will protect us, I have space and view! And, I still get to shove some GDBMSGTCOONHTTS
dontcallmeplath
Oh, thanks!

HenryFondle
I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I shall square up to any bro
HenryFondle
that deems the pit wall unjust and know that other watchers will have my back.

Pretty fuckin' accurate on the unwritten rules my dude. The pit is really sweet if people know how to mosh right.
ethanhawkeye
I went to see The Pogues (Irish punk band for the uninformed) years ago and #4 happened followed by #6 before the opening act even finished.
KyleBadge
I learned early on to bring my biggest friends. Being 120 pounds in high school and loving the pit, I wouldn't have made it without them.
ProfileBanned
Even my tiny 150 pound friend shoulder charged a douchebag and broke his nose in the pit (After the dude elbowed a girl in the pit, hard af)
dontcallmeplath
My favorite is when you're squished way too fucking tight but people still want to mosh so I can go limp and just float back and forth.
ilipickles
Like a wave pool :)

Lol, just like "Well this is happening. Best of luck guys, i'll be here."
WhoTheFuckisGavin
I was once reading youtube moshpit comments ... There are some very vicious people in there. Admitting they would elbow ppl in the face /1
WhoTheFuckisGavin
on purpose or step on ppl who fell on the ground ... I'm glad that all mosh pits I've been to, everyone had decent etiquette 2/2
AlwaysTakeABananaToAParty
There's another unwritten rule. If someone is actively trying to hurt people, they get one warning jab If it keeps up, they get a nap.
RagingDrunkard
so spot on, the older less energetic metalhead description actually hurt a little.
Fincozmoz
I've been all three categories of metal head and they are spot on!

Same. It makes me sad I can't keep up like I could 10 years ago
SifrNihilum
I won't deny I cringed a little there as well... Sad times..

‘the guy who has been getting *drunk in the parking lot for 3 hours before the show starts’ *taking speed/smoking joints/railing coke/etc...
RagingDrunkard
Okay, fine, a lot. .It hurt a lot.
mentalproblemz
Ahh to be young again full of piss and vinegar. I am now relegated to the exterior crowd, with my lukewarm beer and solo headbang
KyleBadge
I'm there too man, checking my phone to make sure the babysitter hasn't called.
KyleBadge
That's where I am now, because I did my time in the pit and took my lumps. But when it starts going I get that familiar itch to jump in.
imnottherealshady
It's ok bud. *Hands beer bottle filled with prune juice* now you can drink like the kids and still keep regular!
GilderoyPopDropNLockart
I'm getting there...

I am proud to be in the category. I no longer leave shows unable to move my head/neck/shoulders for the next 3 days. I did my time :)

I might be going to see Megadeth & Scorpions in September. Sadly, Metallica isn't coming to UT and I missed Slayer last year :\
randomitguy
Right on brotha! Whipper snapper knocks into my beer I'll fuckin end 'em tho.
MaladaptedMedic
Oh, you're THAT guy? Brings a $15 beer into the pit and seems astonished that someone knocked into him and made him spill most of it
randomitguy
Knowing me, I'd probably sneak in a plastic flask with something a little stronger. I was just trying to be funny with the beer thing.
MaladaptedMedic
Plastic flask is absolutely the way to go! +1
