When Ellon took over I called him a name and got suspended. They wanted my cellphone number to reactivate, noooooope

'this is an X twitter!'

Because they just instituted their AI to train on all the posts without any way to opt out of it. It was the last straw for many people.

Never had Twitter, but the general view seems to be people were waiting to see what the actual viable alternative was going to be. For all the rhetoric about how shitty Twitter and Sissy SpaceX were, a lot of the larger Twitter presences weren't willing to actually give it up if it likely meant losing all their followers, and a lot of users didn't want to take a gamble that there wouldn't be enough active users to follow or hold their interest.

Major brands, celebrities and such have huge followings. To switch platforms means starting over from scratch. They needed to be sure there would be enough of an audience to make it worth the hassle.

I think the big trigger was Twitter removing the ability to block people.

That would make sense

I think people didn't want to leave and were hoping to ride it out until after Harris won the election, in the hopes that... everything would magically fix itself then, I guess? Instead Trump & Elon won, and immediately the right began to gloat & taunt & plan ever crazier shit, so people finally left in droves, as they should have done ages ago.

part of me thinks it was just all the twitter bots leaving now that the election is over

Naw. That doesn't explain the surge in app store downloads. Both farm would just use the same file. And real people who publicly announced on Twitter they were moving over.
YouCantSpellSlaughterWithoutLaughter
That would not explain the surge in posts on this very site about deactivating twitter.
