If you don't want things to sneak up on you in the ocean, wear polarized glasses. If I forget my polarized glasses when I go out, I'll turn around and go back home to get them. They make a huge difference in how well you can see below the surface of the water.

From what I know about shark behavior it's seems like a really bad idea to have a potentially bleeding and erratically moving fish on the end of that line in murky water.
