I never got into Gundam much, save for two series (which are sort of the opposite of each other); G Gundam and the 08th MS Team series. The animation on both were beautiful, the stories and characters were engaging, and it didn't feel like I needed a history book to understand the general conflict.
A lot of Gundam kind of feels lore heavy and complex. Maybe I'm wrong. If you think there are any good series beyond the two I mentioned, let me know. Also, let me know which era/universe they are.

You just gotta remember that the original series is the UC era. It’s the longest running one in terms of story and if you want to get into it you would need to start with 0078, zeta, double zeta than chars counter attack. The era continues on in the future with F91 and victory but they can be watched by themselves as they are so far from the original series. 8th ms, 0080 and 0083 were made in the 90s as filler series in between 0078 and zeta. All other Gundam shows are standalone from the UC era

@lincloud, how much time do you have? Because I can give you as much or as little yapping about Gundam as you want.
Basically, 08th MS Team takes place in the Universal Century timeline, which is the main Gundam canon. The main event of UC is the One Year War between Earth and space colonies, and that's about all you need to know to start. I really like the first series, Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) but it does show its age so be prepared for that.

Available on Disney+/Hulu for those in US.

8th is my favorite of the franchise
JustSomePersonThere
#16 Christ this is LITERALLY EVERY GODDAMN ANIME right there! Shit is the same cast, the same tropes, the same characters every. Single. Time. I don’t understand how anyone takes that medium seriously.
NearEastMugwump
What the fuck are you talking about?

My suspense of disbelief collapses like a house of card when I see giant bipedal robots with swords

Gundam00 is probably the best realized show I've seen in the franchise. Grew up on Wing, enjoyed G for what it was, but nothing in any mecha show has been as grounded and I guess I'll say possible? for lack of a better phrase. The conflicts, the actions taken by the characters, the worldviews, it all just makes sense, and you have to suspend very little disbelief to fall into the anime. It may be too relatable right now, but I could not recommend a mecha over it. GurrenLagann is incomparable
Strerosh
Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans is very much a stand alone story, no real connections to the others.
DragonBjorne
Wait. Not one of those characters was in a mask. What is this? Macross? Patlabor?
Imustntrunaway
08 MS is a good time. I've personally binged all of the gundam UC universe, which included 08. It's a lot of fun.

Gundam requiem for vengeance is a bit janky in animation but I found its story to be pretty solid
Gundam wing was the series that got me into the franchise , very fun to watch the Gundams rip through the enemy like tissue paper
OtterlyMagnificent
Same. Wing was my introduction to the Gundam franchise. I enjoyed G, but Requiem for Vengeance felt like it went back to the roots of Gundam and turned everything on its head.
For so much of the UC timeline we've seen the Federation as the good guys and Zeon as the bad guys (affably evil in many cases, but almost always portrayed as irredeemable evil). Requiem showed us how terrifying the Gundam was from their side of things, and humanized Zeon a little bit.

I am a G gundam truther. that shit is peak gundam x shonen.

If you guys like Gundam and have a problem with not spending money frivolously enough, there's a new tactical miniatures game for Gundam looking to drain your wallets! https://global.bandai-hobby.net/en-us/site/gundam-assemble/
acme64
when i look at this game i always wonder, why would i bother with the miniatures when i have perfectly good gunpla available
randumbwon
Skirmish or other minis games tend to have shortish popularity cycles. Do you consider the ruleset better than say Necromunda or comparable property?
IlluminaBlade
Apparently people are big mad that some recent Gundam media has space aliems.
confracto
some people are mad about every new Gundam media. ...it kinda just happens when you have enough people who care.
grujav
Its not the first time aliens have been in Gundam though which is odd about the complaint. The 00 Gundam movie had aliens, as did the fourth Gundam Build Fighters series. Gundam Seed has an alien fossil. Crossbone and Victory have alien bacteria.
The new video game I think its more the issue that with the aliens in it and the mecha designs it doesn't look/"feel" like Gundam, but people only have a minute or two of gameplay/cut scenes to go off of yet. People not liking designs and claiming...
grujav
that the show (or video game in this instance) is not proper Gundam is a super old complaint that keeps getting brought up. Gundam doesn't have a formula the way say a Macross series does, so its really personal taste.
TheFastpaws
I remember when I first got into Gundam and downloaded this series on KazaA. I thoroughly enjoyed it but man has it been a long time since I've seen someone else mention it.
AlwaysDownvoteDots
Dude the emphasis was on the z. It was KaZaa. Come on. (Still torrenting today, fuck the MPAA).
TheFastpaws
It has been decades since I used it dude! I was a kid!
IlluminaBlade
There's a high-ish budget single player videogame that was announced recently, and an anime that is apparently setting up its universe.
JustSomePersonThere
Mf really just said kazaa in 2026

#1 Is that Gundam casting Fist?
thewiggins
somewhere, out there, a Hunchback pilot just spilled their cheap beer.
StarSumiaki
Short answer: yes.
Longer answer: It's a slightly complicated joke. The Ez8's pilot does use the machine's own severed arm as a melee weapon in the show. However, the pilot's voice actor ALSO voices a guy in a different show who pilots a different robot that can shoot its fist rocket punch style. Here, the Ez8 is partially mimicking that rocket punch.
Schidi
It wanted to throw hands
JustSomePersonThere
High quality joke.
MostAwesomeDan
That fight with the Gouf has some of the most visceral combat I've seen in any Gundam show and the story is all the better for it. It's also how I fell in love with that suit.
DukeSliscus
What I like is that it shows how terrifying it is for the average Joe mobile suit pilot when an "ace" pilot shows up.
LincLoud
Weird fact, one of the bad guys is voiced by the VA for Cosmo from Fairly Oddparents
drw16
you might like gundam hathaway. has a lot of "oh my god, im a human on the street and a beam weapon just melted a building" going on.
SlyMrFox
Recently watched Witch from Mercury. THAT scene really showed how how monsterous giant robots are next to us blood sacks.
