I made a dice tower. I wanted to maximize randomness. I did not realize that this would also make it take this long to roll. Might not seem like that long but it ends up being noticable.

When I was at comic con there was a seller that had made these beautiful wooden dice towers from wood. The cheapest one was like 100 dollars.

That means you only bust it out for the most dramatic rolls.

This does ensure that when I, as the Game Operations Director, make a roll but don't tell the players why, that they will notice. And then I look at it and make a random anything-but-a-poker face. And then they wonder...

Have you measured the increase in randomness?

no, but my research into it indicated that distance traveled across the table was the largest contributor to randomness. The tower contains 10 revolutions of a circle with diameter 36mm, so horizontal distance traveled would be 36 *pi * 10, about 1.13 meters(i think my math is right).

Excellent. Gathering the need data would take forever at over 4 seconds a roll. I reckon 1000 rolls from each starting point (1 "up" at drop, etc ) would give a good idea of the distribution was flat. This needs a robot

I did also design a device that would hold d20s and drop them at the press of a lever. Would be useful for that testing to get a consistent drop height.

I love all of my dice, even when they disappoint me. They're good dice, Bront.
