They have to then go through a long process of untangling themselves from the sunk-cost-fallacy telling them they can still get something out of all this if they hang on a little longer. And even then, people leaving doesn't automatically mean they're going to see sense and join the other side against Trump; most of them will just crawl off to sulk in a corner over it.

Come election time people always question "why haven't the democrats made our lives perfect yet?" and since the democrats haven't been able to succeed, people vote republican. (obviously not everybody, but a significant number of people who vote don't even know who's running 45 days before the election - they aren't paying attention to the news, they aren't paying attention to the polls, they're just dumbasses)
