About five years ago I vented to Imgur I wasn't going to make it to long service leave which means no extra leave and no bonus pay.
Lots of positive energy and support from our community and l...I made it.
Well here I am again, this time a little extra leave and bonus.
Isn't it interesting that we reward endurance at a company!?
I know this is a first world problem. I know someone would dream about my worst day. I can't help but feel a little sorry for myself....
I feel like my career is going backwards. Had staff, now none and in recent restructure, demoted....no longer reporting to my boss who I actually like. FYI I don't think he drove the recent change, which came from even further up the chain. However, I am on same pay...so same pay but less responsibility...some people have asked if I am nuts!? I must be wired different. I care about what I do and whilst not lofty ambitions was hoping to keep moving up the company.
Instead I am thinking of leaving and my next job. Which is a worry since I am not getting any younger and the job market is tight.
If they don't see my value, then hopefully somewhere else will.
TLDR: wonder if I should swallow pride and stick around for long service leave bonuses after recent demotion.

I solve business problems. I use a combination of process improvement and project management methodologies. Implement changes that show a measureable difference.

Maybe just look around and find out if your skills are in demand. Bonuses are no substitute for everyday enjoyment

Did the demotion come with a pay reduction?
How valid is the demotion because they may have done that to reduce the amount they have to pay for long service leave.

No pay or benefits reduction. Not sure if it is personality related. Seemed targeted although was assured it was not.

What I'm hearing from you is that you've got 11 months to work on your network and resume before a nice bonus, vacay, and departure for greener pastures.

Dude. Go. Companies do not reward loyalty or endurance anymore and you're kidding yourself if you think that you do. I tell every young person I can they need to be changing their job every four years, if not two or three. It is the fastest, best, and often ONLY way to advance. Combine that with it can take 200-300 applications to land a new job? Dude. Never let your resume idle. In 2024, you are ALWAYS looking for a new job. If not? Well, man, you're streets behind.

Stick it out for the 11 months. Then if nothing is better, take all you can and go. You’ve made it this far and if quiet quitting is an option in the mean time, then go for that.

Thanks that is where I would like to be...maybe the Xmas break will help. Quiet quitting is not really my style but I'll certainly look reduce discretionary effort.

Some people prefer being individual contributor, some want to help others and lead/mentor. Some people need urgency to get anything done.
