"Watch out in Doll Town!" Children's traffic education was rather drastic in 1969

Old booklet we found at my grandma's. We can only guess they got this at a gas station back then. One interesting look into the past.

I can't translate all the text, but it all rhymes and educates the kids on what they did wrong. Obviously no blood is shown, as these characters are all supposed to be dolls and toys.

"Never run after your dog right into traffic, especially when there's a zebra crossing right next to it." The traffic signs were supposed to be coloured in by the young reader. My uncles & aunts didn't put in the most effort.

"Always look left & right! Be patient!" says the teddy police.

"Don't play on the street! And if you don't want to hear, you will have to feel the consequences!" says the teddy police. Doll doctor does not know if little Brigitte will ever heal. Btw I love the illustrations of the contemporary car models in this book.

"The side walk is not a race track!"

"A gateway is no place to play" - hey this rhymes too. Btw the monkeys are no "stand-in" for a black children, before anyone gets offended. We get to that later.

"You daddy now has to pay 3000 Mark to have those cars fixed!" The two girl dolls call him a poser in the first pic.

"Never run over the street when the light is red, even when adults around you do it!" The text make sit clear that the girl doll straight up died.

"The street is no football field!" Also clearly the most product placement strip in the book, fittingly with the least injured dolls. And a really nice BWM 2002 Ti.

"The street is also no skating court!" This boy doll is also pronounced dead.

"Stay away from waggon wheels." Another dead doll.

So the red shirt doll exits the tram and just crosses in front of it, where it get's hit by the Beetle.

"Don't cross the street in front of buses or trams. Always look left & right!" says the teddy police. Now follows the longest story, blue and yellow shirt get into the unlocked Benz, play car and release the hand brake.

And off the car goes downhill. And now here we have an African child doll. "Neger" means negro, it wasn't a derogatory term, basically just meant "Black African". And ofc in the 1960s, black people were rather rare in Germany, best chance to meet one was probably around US Army bases. Else you'd need to go to Sub-Saharan Africa. Means this book really was pretty inclusive for its time.

Final moral lesson with the teddy police, all the dolls are still hurt and swear that they learned their lesson, and won't ever repeat their mistakes. And next to that the most common traffic signs at the time, many have changed since those days.
