Never got why people think German is ugly. I speak German and think it's just lovely, with lots of accent variation. I speak some Dutch too, now there's a language with a lot of throat clearing. To say nothing of Arabic, yikes, it's not pretty at all. German gets a lot of undeserved hate.

Tbf tho the reason many people think German sounds aggressive is because either they mostly know it from WW2 movies/games where it's soldiers yelling at each other, Hitler himself yelling in his speeches, or people making jokes about how supposedly aggressive it sounds. All languages sound aggressive if you're yelling.
I have friends from Germany and they just talk like normal people when they speak German lol.

Yeah tbh I was shocked too. I was listening to my German friend speaking German and it was very soft and sounded nice. I myself, prior to that, had only ever really heard German spoken in movies and video games. Also Germans tend to be friendly. Like if you ask them how they are they'll actually answer with details haha.
As a sidenote it's remarkable how many words were similar to English, as a testament to English's Germanic roots. Like I could almost understand what they were saying.

Yeah, there's usually less "meaningless" social phrases in German, when starting up a conversation and especially "how are you" is often seen as an invitation to talk about what's currently going on in ones life.
Answering with a polite "I'm fine" is usually a way to either signal that you're not interested in further conversation or to switch to a different topic than personal life.
A polite phrase that doesn't reflect the state of the person might even be seen as dishonest or disrespect.

I watched this video on YouTube years ago when I was trying to learn basic German phrases and the guy said you can ask people coming out of a supermarket what they bought, and usually German people that weren't in a hurry would actually tell you. And he proceeded to interview people coming out of a supermarket and almost everybody responded with a smile. Like "Ein Brot, Kohl, Käse und Wein" and stuff, while looking in their bags.

It is objectively a very harsh sounding language even when spoken normally with a lot of words containing or ending with 'ch', 'tz', 'st', etc or many words ending in hard consonants as opposed to some softer flowing languages like Spanish or French.

I think it's presentation, you can make American sound aggressive or lazy depending on how you pronounce and put emphasis in the words.
I think Japanese doesn't sound aggressive when being shouted, they have these very masculine men with gruff voices and they still sound whimsical.

True, but I think you could call American English a distinct dialect. Granted there are distinct languages like Czech and Slovak that may be closer to each other in practice than various dialects of English are and we just don't want to call them different languages.

Also regional dialects are totally a thing. My HS German teacher spoke Austrian German and it's gorgeous. She was very cautious to teach us the Germany German vocab but her vocal cadence was downright Italian. I could listen to that woman read a cook book.

But mostly not as harsh sounding when you're a native speaker and it just rolls up your throat and down your tongue. It's much worse when a non native speaker tries to pronounce all the ch, CH, rr, str or glottis-sounds. Also depends heavy on the Region you're from - Bavarians speaking high German sound still differently than p.e. Palatians or Saxons.

We Dutch have similar hard sounds in our language. It makes the language notoriously difficult for a foreigner to pronounce. Must be a regional thing, neighbour! ;)

Tbh, this kinda always, felt weird to me, as a German from the Rhineland around Cologne, I always felt that the ch / g sounds ect made dutch seem softer than especially high German?
Maybe it's how those sounds make a word seem more fluid than having a hard consonant.
Although then on holiday I often felt that the Dutch speaking tourists made up for that with a generally louder speaking voice 🤣
