Both. AI has implicit biases built into it. Best example is facial recognition software accuracy going to shit with minorities. AI photo editing can do the same thing when it's overly trained on white faces and hallucinates as it tries to split the difference between training data and input data. Then on the flip side, there may be actual whitewashing happening in the original video. It being film from the 40s there is a pretty high chance of their makeup intentionally lightening them up.
In one picture they have camera flash lighting directly in their face. In the other picture the lighting is ambient. Why does the white person in both pics look pretty similar, but these two brothers change SEVERAL shades darker in the non flash pic?

The lighting is forward facing instead of off to a side creating more shadow. Two things: I just want to make sure I understand; you are saying that I am photo-editing pictures in order to make them seem lighter with this whitewash thing? And second... Those are two ENTIRELY DIFFERENT people? I don't know why they look similar.
