I've been a smoker for something like 23 years now. I'm 34 years old. Over the past year, it's really taken it's toll on me. I don't feel healthy anymore. I have been exposed to nicotine since before I was born. My father was a smoker. My Mom smoked, she smoked while pregnant with me then they both smoked in the house growing up. I don't know if that has anything to do with why it's so difficult for me.
It's a constant psychological battle I have with myself, every single day. I know I need to quit. I know the dangers yet.. I cannot. I feel like a failure. My excuse was that my husband was my trigger, or stress was my trigger. My husband has been quit for 4 days now and is going strong. Why can't I seem to stop?
I have tried patches, gum, vaping, Allen Carr's easy way book and Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin worked great at first, but slowly stopped, I have since stopped taking it with in the last couple of months. I just recently joined some facebook groups that are supportive. I need to know how to control my brain. My anxiety goes to a 10 or higher even the thought of quitting makes me anxious. Please help me, I'll take anything I can get. I'm about ready to go key a cop car and get arrested just to be forced into quitting.. as jail was the only time in my life that I was quit for over a month. I felt great but I was young and wasn't ready to quit then.
I'm going to die if I don't stop. I thought I'd come here and ask since I always see "Thank you imgur" posts and you guys changing lives. If you have quit and were like me, how did you do it?? How do I re-wire my brain to accept that I quit smoking? I don't want to die.

I quit smoking after 6 years by completely running out of fucking money.

Do what I did. Switch to vaping and slowly lower your nicotine amount. Then once it's down to almost nothing try stopping for a day.
leeroypowers
I smoked 1 pack/day for 15 yrs. In Feb I got an ecig with highest nicotine level. Every refill i buy one step down. Zero cigs in 3 months

How about an ultimatum: for every cigarette you smoke you have to blow the first guy that comments. Twice.
QuincyEndicott
When my friend quit she started hacking up black phlegm at about 2 weeks in.
Boldswede
Vaping worked for me
pikakid24
Cold turkey is the easiest way. But no matter what it's not going to be truly easy. Good luck @op

I used an app as support. It shows money saved and healt benefits, made it in to a game. Also ate lots of lollipops.
imadeulook
Spoiler alert: you're gonna die whether you quit or not.

I've heard that before but pot makes me freak out. I'm from WA too where it's legal here all around. Maybe I could try it again
Zucheto
Replacing smoking with smoking plus psychological effects is probably not the best idea lol.
ColdAsHell
It's a complete lifestyle change u need to change habits where u would smoke you need to do something different...keep hands and mouth busy.

I'm in the same boat.
Velisity
Scary :( I hope you find the strength to quit someday as I hope so too
filthyoldmanwhore
Try cocaine.

If anything you would want to smoke more
daringtons
Smoked for 25 years. Promised my Mrs I would try to quit after she asked. Went cold turkey that night. Almost 5 years smoke free now.
Velisity
Wow congrats that's amazing.. How long was it hard for you? or how long did it take for you to forget about it and live?
misterbookman
When your "why" is big enough, you will figure out the "how".
daringtons
I havent. I still want to smoke a lot of the time. But not as bad as before, I don't think it will ever leave me just gotta have willlpower

You're gonna hate me but quit cold turkey. Avoid anyone who smokes for at least two weeks. It's gonna be nasty headaches>
TheyMayBeFakeButTheyreGrrrrreat
Drink shit tons of water. Listen to music you don't normally listen to. Run. Swim. Avoid restaurants. Wash your laundry. Paint your walls
TheyMayBeFakeButTheyreGrrrrreat
Get to a gym and surround yourself with health nuts. Let them know your life changes. They will support you. Throw out ash trays.
TheyMayBeFakeButTheyreGrrrrreat
Buy some nice clothes with the money you're saving (do the math) and throw out the ones you associate with smoking.
Aur0ra18
I used the Smoke Free app.

I'm on day one of quitting using Champix. Tried all the other stuff you did too. Feel pretty good so far. No cravings. Good luck.
Velisity
That's one I haven't tried. I've been asking my doctor for a prescription. The side effects are intimidating
march1studios
Yeah, I felt the same way. Messed with my sleep the first couple of days, but I feel ok now. Just started day 8 of pills.

If this doesn't work, I'm trying hypnosis.
zachwhack
Try brushing your teeth when you get a craving. Also try lolipops or chewing gum, just to entertain your mouth. You can do this!!!
Velisity
I can, I know I can, god damnit
zachwhack
Not everything works for everyone. Keep trying till you find what works for you. EVERYONE will thank you, especially your body, and wallet
hoxanator
Whatever you do don't do Chantix. What if you tried exercise? I'd think that when I'm getting winded, etc it'd be a strong reminder to quit.
Velisity
Ugh that was one I had wondered about
blueknot
Take this as one-of-many suggestions: Throw old butts in a jar, add a little water at bottom. When you feel like smoking, take a big whiff.
Oyer
I know someone that did this and it worked!
Velisity
I'll try that thank you :) I knew asking here would be a great idea
blueknot
It's a discouragement. It should smell to you like cigarettes smell to non-smokers.
TheyMayBeFakeButTheyreGrrrrreat
Yes you stink to everyone else lol..The rotting cigs in water is comparable
KevinAtWorkDoingNothing
For me, it was constantly reminding myself that people think I smell awful and my teeth are going to go to shit. Also, having my kid.
Velisity
I've been thinking that for years now :/ I also have a 3 year old. I do not understand why I can't get past this
Astrosimian
Quitting smoking is the easiest thing I ever did. I quit 7 times. Staying a non smoker is hard as fuck.
Velisity
I hear you :( I was born in 82 and I remember going to school there was a Joe Camel billboard I saw everyday. I'm brainwashed
Astrosimian
I had to break every habit I associated with smoking. Morning coffee with smoke? Changed to morning tea. Smoke after meal? Washed dishes.
Astrosimian
Couldn't go to bars for about 3 months.
