Forging with hammer and anvil
A quick polish to 600 grit just inside the first inch of the fuller, to preview what the rest of the sword will look like when finished.

I am wondering, what is a point of these weakening cutouts in the most load bearing part of the blade?

Firstly, the blade is correctly hardened, tempered and with a proven geometry to survive the hits. There are thinner swords than this. Secondly, all cutouts have a radius instead of sharp corners to remove possible stress-risers.

Art. Design. Display of skill. Personal subjective taste. Whatever you want to call it. Why are there different designs for anything that has a basic use? If it does it's job, what's the point of decorating it, or changing its color, or embedding gold inlays, or putting jewels in the pommell? What a boring world it would be. Does that help?

Sword is a weapon, it is a functional item. In functional items aesthetics comes from function. Decoration that contradicts the function works against aesthetics. That is my take on it. That's why most of the fantasy game weapons are so ewww for me.
