I just started playing a couple weeks ago, but soul sand for up, magma blocks for down, fill each square in the hole with a water source. I'm playing in creative mode rn so I just swam up and down spamming the water bucket until I had bubbles all the way up/down

Neat trick: you can sink a boat on top of the magma, and you won't get burned when you reach the bottom - and it doesn't block the bubbles.

If you're not in creative you can use seaweed to turn flowing water in to water sources.
