There's a route I take that can be done safely with any stats and no equipment. Usually I go luck 10 and head straight for the casinos to play blackjack, rack up enough money and buy top tier gear. Who needs XP when you've got money?

I went that way once. Glitched half the Cazadors by getting to a spot on the hill they couldn't get to & wasted most of my ammo taking out the few left.

One of the things I like most about fallout games is that if you want to, and you can scrounge the ammo and cheese the AI and have a good place to backpedal to, you can tackle an entire quarry full of deathclaws at level 5 and eventually slaughter them all.

i didn't, my first game bugged out before leaving goodspring so restarted and on my second a Cazador somehow got to goodspring and proceeded to murder everything it could, this was enough to discourage me from going that way

There’s a third road behind Goodspring that leads behind the Quarry. there’s a nest of Cazadors in that road, probably were your bug friend came from.

If you follow the recommended path, then you start out fighting weak enemies, and they get stronger as you progress and level up. If you take this "shortcut" then you quickly run into much stronger enemies, who are balanced for the expectation that you should have… several hours more gameplay under your belt.
