#23 living in survival mode for whatever reason (ongoing trauma, mental illness, even physical illness) will do that.

#23 I met up with my ex 10 yrs ago, we'd been divorced for almost 20 years, and she was talking about things from our past that I have no recollection of whatsoever. I'd had a massive mental meltdown several years before we met up again, and psych said that I'd suffered severe traumatic amnesia due to my mental breakdown. When you try to explain this to people, you can see the incomprehension in their eyes, and the common response that I get is "be positive, and it'll all come back"... WTF

#23: I had a psychologist back in the olden days who would get miffed because I’d often forget my checkbook. I always thought “If you were better at your job, this wouldn’t be happening.”

The more complex a system is, the higher the chance of deviation from the optimal, and there is nothing known to mankind that can compete with the overwhelming complexity of his own mind. Thus, in one of the cruelest of ironies, the way we treat mental health issues is patently insane.
