'Spose it beats some guy with a computer and phone set up in an economically challenged zone winning bids and then just outsourcing everything while skimming 20% of the costs.
It’s pure greed. They coulda licensed the design to a proper armory with proper tooling but they wanted to not share a cent with anyone, so they did their damndest to do it alone. Raw greed.
Many small businesses fail because they try to apply large scale manufacturing ideas from the start to make their products cheaper, but it never works because the only reason large scale production is cheap is because it's large scale.
Totally similar story to Lancia. They had a couple race cars with the full on safety rails inside, and only half the total cars they needed. So, they went to ONE parking lot where most of the cars had cardboard tubes painted blue to look like the real roll cages……. Then took the inspectors to lunch, got them good and drunk, then took them to a different parking lot where ALL THE SAME CARS had been moved….. solving two problems. v
There's a lot of examples like this, which is great for making a singular good product, but lousy for wars. Like, Italy had amazing engineers and craftmanship... and a guild system that was basically hundreds of 3 guys in a shed making everything up to planes and tanks. Great for Lambos and espresso machines, bad for arming a million dudes to go kill other dudes with.
