Lets get this bread
I dreamed I knew the world was going to be destroyed by a decent chunk of antimatter in a given amount of time (about an hour or two?) and I had to gather 15 people to keep the species alive and aliens would rescue us and carry us elsewhere and I'm like:
"Bruh, the best fifteen people i would select pretty much dont want to have kids. Also there is no way that would be a healthy genetic founding population. Unless you have some sort of magic tech, you'd need a minimum of 100 people. And these 15 people I'd choose are not even local to me. I think you misunderstand the nature of how fucked up our society is."
"Either choose someone else and a proper number, or leave us alone and let us as a species and a world die. But if you have tech for me to bring my 15 best friends to me to watch the world end with a couple of six-packs and some bottles from my apocalypse stash, I will accept."
Cue a time skip and me and 15 friends drinking out in the Utah desert watching a hunk of antimatter crash into the earth and us singing Tom Lehrer.

I have joked about if I was absurdly rich, I would own a replica Drakkar [Norse longship] and raid houseboats in Lake Powell

Harvesters by Vincent Van Gogh. Probably not the exact name of the painting but I just woke up and have not had enough coffee to trundle through internet searching.

1) Are you on the run to a safe place and passing through Arizona on your way to safer grounds? My apartment is open to you to crash at, and it is a safe space. Pippin and I will make you a meal and gladly share tea, wine, or mead with you.
2) Hey! Take your meds with a full glass of water, please. Do it for Pippin, or Space Mom, or better yet, do it for yourself.
3) Ĝefeloað wē. We will carry on.
4) all funds from the sales of items at these two links will be sent to support charities aiding to fight for Trans rights in the US (not just T-shirts!)

My daughter has a minor in studio art and a phd in geology, I guess she did it right!

#43 Fossils? In 6,000 years? Sounds a bit on the brief side - is there any mineralisation present?
isetprettygirlsonfire
I don't know about these fossils in particular, but lithification can happen suprisingly fast (am geologist). Also mineral replacement isn't required for something to be a fossil. The definition of a fossil is a trace of past life; it can be bones, shells, tracks etc.
A great example is a fossil pine cone my ex (also a geologist) found in an ~2000 year old ash bed. Part was still pinecone, part wast carbon and part had been silicified.

Hey OP, re: your dream - please tell me you’ve read Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis trilogy! It’s one of the best sci-fi books out there!

#19 If I were rich, I'd get a massive plot of land and build a giant old time looking castle (but with modern technology in it) complete with a moat, arrow slits, secret passages, and a long spiraling staircase leading to basement with a permanently locked metal door with strange and slightly menacing symbols etched onto it.

And behind it is where you keep the Amontillado, right?

OK, so I had to find out: https://www.sciencespherex.com/2025/03/how-much-antimatter-to-destroy-earth.html and it's a few thousand tonnes for a Chicxulub size explosion, or a few billion tonnes for full planetary annihilation...
CodyBurkett
I'm thinking it was more the former, than the latter. Enough to kill off all life, but the planet would survive. At least judging by the fireball I saw

#21 "Gatherer-Hunter" is more accurate because gathering was/is approximately 80%. Mind you, this is not random. It suited scientists in citations and becoming famous to put "hunting" first. The more weapons, the more publicity & braveness. Men researched men and were peer reviewed by men on leadership, weapons, economy. Voices of women: lost. Tons of unreflected biases = binary gender stereotypes. Worst: women DID hunt. Even pregnant & with kids. TF "we always stayed home".

It doesn't say anything about hunting capybaras. But since those are South American creatures, along with Ground Sloths that the owls apparently DID feast upon. Maybe?
Also, since they only died off about 6000 years ago, their burrows should still exist, much like Ground Sloths'?
