Fully agree with the shittiness of the people doing this, but on a different note, why are hotels answering that question in the first place? That shouldn't be available information for random nobodies asking. If I call a hotel and ask "is George Witherspoon staying there?" I should get told to mind my own business and be hung up on.

She didn't say they told anyone? They might have just told *her* that someone called asking. I don't know how tf she'd know that someone was calling OTHER hotels, though.

First of all, I'm with you.
However, "Hi, I can't get in contact with my client, Ms. Blankenblank. I'm afraid her phone may have died. Can you transfer me to her room?"
If the answer isn't "I'm afraid we have no person under that name here." then the overworked $9 an hour person answering the phone accidentally gave me a really good clue as to whether or not she's there. Because "I'm sorry, I can't transfer you to her room, it's against company policy." Just told me she's staying there.

I mean, fair, I'm not gonna blame the overworked person at the desk if the policy is bad, but it's just weird. Coming from the world of software the idea that the answer would not be "I'm sorry, that's against policy" regardless of whether someone with that name is there (before even looking at the names list) is strange. It feels like those old password things that told you "invalid password" instead of "incorrect username/password combination" and gave away that it was a valid username.

It feels like "oh, this is a reasonable thing to do" until you think about it and realize it's giving away information...and it seems like hotels have had more than enough time to make that realization and just have it be standard operating procedure to refuse requests like that. Just weird.

As somebody who used to work in security I can attest...terrorism is fuckin' easy to do.
The joke that if you show up in a High Vis vest with a clipboard and you can anywhere you want? It's kind of not really just a joke.
One of the buildings I used to manage security left the back door unlocked from 8am to 3 pm, so as not to bother the workers with having to use their badge back there. Any idea how many times escapees from the prison down the road got inside?

Look at it this way, unless you work in mall security, what do you do if two guys in work wear turn up, disconnect a vending machine, lever it onto a trolley and leave with it? You'd probably assume they were supposed to do that.

Shit, I had a guy once show up with a big ass cement cutter and steal the sidewalk in front of the building.
No permit, no advanced notice, nothing. The Head of Maintenance forgot to let us know someone was coming to replace a water pipe. it was on a Sunday, so nobody to get a hold of.
Dir. of Sec. (my boss) was like "I don't care, let him do it. I don't get paid enough to listen to Leon [Head of Main] whine." lol

Some places make sure the guards get notice of all work orders for the day just to prevent stuff like that. The guards are also supposed to be suspicious and might call to check stuff while the regular overworked stall vendors probably won't ask, care or even notice.
