Happy Monday, fellow Imgurians! On Saturday I taught an Etch A Sketch workshop at the Buder Library in St. Louis. You all were so supportive about my announcement that I figured I'd share a quick post about how the workshop went!
It's showtime!
One of my favorite things about teaching Etch A Sketch workshops is that it brings whole families together. Parents often fondly recollect early childhood memories of trying to tame this beast into compliance, and they get to share that lighthearted and nostalgic frustration with their children.
Another cool thing about teaching Etch A Sketch workshops is that I get to introduce kids to the toy who have never played with it before! Kids of my generation remember Etch A Sketch mostly through Toy Story. Gen Z probably connects Etch A Sketch mostly with the movie Elf. Gen Alpha though? Well they might have watched both of those movies, but what I'm trying to say is that Hollywood needs to step up their game and slip Etch A Sketch into another box office hit. In the meantime I'm happy to do my part to share the Coolest Toy Ever with the children of today - one workshop at a time.
Here I am pointing at something very important! See how I capture the rapt attention of three students while I eloquently explain something!
In this photo I'm talking about the benefits of drawing a flat line under each letter of my name, which makes it easier to connect all of the letters together in a word. I always remind my students that I've got it easy when it comes to the name demo because my name is only 4 letters, after all. I always apologize to the Samanthas and the Alexanders when we get to this portion of the lesson!
I believe I was doing a circle demonstration when this photo was snapped. Circles are always a home run!
It's possible that in this photo I was congratulating everyone for completing their staircases by referring to every student as a Stair Master (ba dum tsst)
I wish I snapped more photos of the student art because they always do such a great job!
As a final reminder, if you happen to know of a cool library, park district, or museum near you that you think would be the perfect venue for an Etch A Sketch workshop, I'd love to chat more! Feel free to drop me a DM and I can mail you a postcard and bonus sticker, completely free of charge. I teach workshops both in-person and virtually, and I am even available for private and small group lessons!
Thanks again for all of your support, and I look forward to hopefully spreading the joy and ancient knowledge of Etchasketchology to a city near you.

I'm in awe of all of your outfits! Incorporating Angelic Pretty pieces so well can be tough and you just.... do it, flawlessly! Great work on the workshop, I envy those who live close enough to go!

You're growing to be a full-on nice celebrity... not the next Dolly Parton but something in that spirit.

This is amazing but did the parents give consent to have their kids faces posted here?
pikajane
Excellent question, and I'm glad you asked! During the workshop booking process I received permission from the library to take photos and share them provided that the photos were not specifically focused on the kids. Before I left, I showed the librarian every photo I snapped from the workshop and received her thumbs-up that I could post!

that's great. Thanks for explaining this. Happy to hear the event went well too.

Looks like it was a success! Pretty nifty!

Love it, op, this is great! I just have one small note; I think you should've worn a white hat.
7heng
I don't get it ? is she a hacker d: ?
Neednoggle
It would've made her look like an Etch-a-Sketch
pikajane
Ooh a white hat would have been a nice touch for the Etch A Sketch look! Next time (because you know I've already got a white beret haha)
mikeatike
I like your HAT

A PowerPoint, instead of several videos of you simply making each slide on an etch a sketch? For shame.
pikajane
I'll do better next time haha

Yay amazing news!

Ugh.. I can’t believe I missed this.
maffcooper9000
Me too! Only a few miles from my house...
Justinprking
Same. I’m in TGS
bitemark
Awesome I'm glad we get to see an update of how this went! How many people did you have overall?
pikajane
Around 20 students! Some came in and out throughout the class too. In photo #4 you can see one girl who got a bit too shy to return for the rest of the class - alas!
bitemark
Haha that would probably be me except for being a fully grown adult man 😅
pikajane
lol I promise I don't bite! I have historically hosted classes where older guests showed up alone and I want everyone to feel equally welcome to participate in the workshop.
bitemark
You're a good person!

I question your claims to royalty but respect your work too much to investigate your lineage. Glad it went well!
pikajane
Those allegations about my peasant lineage are baseless I say! Baseless!
