Thankfully the IDF have fucked off away from the Irish outpost. Of course everyone here in ireland has been following the events, but it has been great to see how much interest in it has been shown here. The worldwide and viral nature of how much attention these 30 or so irish soldiers were getting clearly had an impact and made some change happen rather than a human shield or "woopsie, u went bewm by accident my bad" scenario.

I'm Irish myself, i start half my comments that way here lol, usually just using that when popping in with some info about ireland, or clarifying im not from the US. It has been great to see the attention that our peacekeepers got this last week tho, thanks.

My niece's husband is in the Defence Forces of Ireland, and deployed to Lebanon with the UN a few years ago, he was actually there when the Beirut explosion happened, luckily far away at the time - he only found out about it when my niece and others from home texting to check he was ok. She put her foot down and said he wasn't going back for another tour; if he had, then he would have been on this one. He knows one of the Irish lads that was stuck in that outpost, as well as many of the 340 in Lebanon at the moment.

tldr;

Anyway, i saw a lot of posts about the Irish troops here, lots of the time these things fizzle out and you never hear what happens after because it isn't as sensational news, so i thought i'd throw in the update :)

The IDF tried to intimidate the Irish peacekeepers from observing their actions, the Irish held their ground. The IDF had to run away

Big ups to the Irish for showing the world what bravery and standing up for what's right looks like. Wish this would get more media attention.

Okay, this is a great issue to not using abbreviations for. It reads as update one the Irish troops, they fucked off. The article even spells out the Irish Defence Force, and then continues to use the term IDF.

Now I think they are talking about the Israeli Defence Force, but with no mention of them and the fact that they spelt out Irish before they used it, I am still not certain that there is some divide among the Irish army that is causing tension

I'll also add this, which might help you out, and you can pay close attention to the official title and see how it is Irish, not English. It's just semantics because you know who the IDF are as well as anyone else. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defence_Forces_(Ireland)

Israel and Ireland both start with the letter I. I hope that helps you confusion, and wish you luck in the rest of your alphabet learnings in the future <3

You don’t say, funny that that was exactly my point.

Yea i know what you are saying, but really now... knowing the context and "IDF" being one of the most well known 3 letters in the world right now, surely it isnt as confusing as you are making it out to be. In other scenarios i can see it being confusing, but unless you have been living under a rock you should know who the IDF are... and that they aren't irish...

I am worried about your reading comprehension. I stated that I think they mean the Israeli Defence Force, but without stating it, and having stated that the Irish Defence Force was there it sounded like a case of for some reason an Irish force was messing with the UN Army.

Irish being used as the main force for the UN is nothing new, but making the decision to say the Irish Defence Force and using IDF instead of the Irish UN force is a poor one from a writing point.

A reminder that attacking UN peacekeepers is a war crime, even if Israel does it... then again, I would suspect the US would block any legal action against Israel for any crimes committed.

Just add it to the list of Israeli war crimes.

Attacking UN Peacekeepers is in fact not always(or even usually) a war crime. It MIGHT be one, depending on the circumstances, and is settled by the International Criminal Court, not the IHL. Killing wounded soldiers is not always a war crime. Killing civilians is not always a war crime either. There is literally an international standard stating how many civilians may legally be killed as collateral damage when eliminating a target based on that target's value.

You are correct in so much as there is an international standard however that standard isn't standard; there is an acceptance that sometimes civilian deaths happen, but you then have to justify the value of your military gain in balance to the civilian loss and that standard is not universal across all nations and is frequently changeable depending on the politics of the day. As to peacekeepers, that situation is fluid; in circumstances where UN or in Bosnia NATO peacekeepers have been 1/

Attacked and the peacekeepers are the "ultimate authority" in the region, then it'll be a war crime. If the peacekeepers are between two forces that it can't beat or could only beat with heavy casualties and the defeat of one would cause the other to capitalise and attack; thus defeating the entire purpose of peacekeeping. Then it's more likely to be a case of we'll jot this down somewhere incase we can ever do anything about it. However because the UN is not a sovereign entity, there is 2/

Nothing stopping a nation taking the killing of its peacekeepers personally and declaring war on the killers. In Lebanon it's rather telling that Israel only tried to intimidate the Irish detachment; the Irish force isn't the largest or the most vital part of rhe peacekeeping force, they are however one of the few nations that have no military alliances and also have openly and vocally been anti Israel on the world stage lately. The israelis if they had totally lost their minds could have 3/

Removed the Irish by force and even if Ireland did want to do something in response it couldn't really because Ireland has a very limited navy, a virtually non existent airforce, very little in long range missiles or strategic weapons of any kind. So the most it could realistically do is sever all diplomatic ties and make enough noise in the hopes that the global community does something. One of the larger groups of the peacekeeping force is made up of troops from the PLAF; and ofc Israel 4/
