It's hard to escape it. Many companies try to do the right thing. One baby diaper company tried to make affordable diapers you can order online. Amazon undercut them and basically gave away diapers for free to mothers until the company went under. It's almost impossible to topple without people actively choosing to in large enough quantities.

Yep. The problem is, that many of the modes of resistance seem to involve large numbers of people becoming less selfish, in their self-interest. And that's the thing - long-term and short term self-interest are not the same thing. Absolutely monarchies and capitalism both took centuries to emerge out of what came before, and changed in unevenly distributed ways. Whatever is next probably already exists quietly in its own niche, waiting to expand when something else retreats.

And people don't choose to. Because when it comes to deciding in grocery aisle, all else being equal, people will always save that .035$ on the toilet paper purchase. Not to mention with greenwashing etc. it's damn near impossible to make an informed decision about anything.
