This is not done to be flashy. John's gun is a Kimber .45 ACP. The man he just killed also had a .45 but a different model. John is making sure the magazine will fit his gun correctly. If there is too much or little space between the top round and the chamber of his Kimber, the gun will jam and John will have to ditch the magazine and find a different gun.
