Huh, what is this image distortion?

Getting closer

This Black Hole distorts the path of light around it, creating a distinctive ring around it.

Full view

You can see the Einstein ring, the black photon sphere, and most obvious, the accretion disc. It warps around the black hole because light coming from the hidden part of the disc gets bend around it.

The disc of hot matter, glowing bright as it slowly falls inwards.

Passing the disc

Getting even closer, you see more images of the disc. The ring on the top comes from light which took a half orbit around the hole, the ring below it is from light which traveled 1 1/2 orbits. And depending on view you can even spot 2 1/2 orbit light.

To close!

If you are this close you experience extreme distortion of spacetime. Oh, and you will not come out again.

Some light still reaches you from outside. It gets brigther and shifted to the blue by the enormous gravity.

So help me out here... I have a pretty good grasp of physics and orbital mechanics... Why is matter falling inward, not in a stable orbit?

Friction against the other particles cause the orbits to decay slowly, thus even in a "stable" orbit region, matter will slowly fall in.

If I had to hazard a guess I'd say from it's ever increasing mass the gravity strengthens, pulling matter and light out of stable orbits

There is an innermost stable orbit, at 1.5 schwarzschild radii. If you go closer, the special 1/r³ term dominates and pulls you inward.
