I had return of the king on dual VHS, yes, it required 2 VHS tapes.

I mean...I knew VHS tapes were still for sale when it came out, but most people I knew had definitely moved on to DVDs by then.

Yup. My family was pretty late to the game regarding DVDs, but by the time LotR came out, we definitely bought it on DVD. I remember because I devoured all the special features on the Extended Edition DVD set. There are four different audio commentaries for the whole length of the movies. FOUR!!!
