In many ways this seems like a modern movie shot on a green screen where most of the scene will be added in later. There’s a sparse set, the actors are interacting with minimal props or nothing at all. Really it’s the same thing, except the entire scene gets redrawn later instead of composited!

It reminds me more of performance capture (a combination of motion capture, facial capture and voice acting, all in one), which is what this ultimately is, just done more manually instead of with the aid of sensors and computers.

I love that the rotoscoping aspect lived on until the 1980's for major productions. Fire and Ice (1983) as an example. I suppose you can also count the Cats film too, but it's not hand drawn like the classics and it lacks charm as a result.

Ed Wynn's episode is my all-time favorite of the Twilight Zone. It's also funny to recognize the Caterpillar in SOUND OF MUSIC and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

Kathryn Beaumont played both Alice in Wonderland and Wendy in Peter Pan, 50 years later she voiced both characters in Kingdom Hearts. 72 years after her original performance as Alice she reprised the role in Alice's Wonderland Bakery. Outside of her acting career she was a school teacher for 30 years.

I love how she was still able to voice those characters at her age, which iirc was around 60 at the time. Didn’t she voice Alice when she was still a kid?

Yeah, but obviously that's because humans have to interpret and hand draw each frame with this method and a computer does it for them with the dots, making it a lot faster and easier. Just apply a 3D model and voila.

That's actually not how this works in real-life. Yes, you get the movement into the computer, but it then needs to be painstakingly adjusted and modified to fit the digital character and scene, to the point that the end result is often completely different. In most movies, motion and facial capture are more of a reference for the animators than anything else. If you don't do this sort of work, you end up with lots of clipping, sliding and awkward motions, like in many videogame cutscenes.

I know. Humans are much better at mapping bodies and non-geometric shapes than computers. They don't need to have that extra layer of contrast to see the edges.
