I would just like to take a moment to address green guy's comment. The city does a wonderful job to reduce the damage of flash flooding, actually. But despite the city's best efforts, it failed us this weekend because the torrent we had was the hardest single day of rain we've had in Las Vegas since 1957. Maybe ever since recorded history of the city.

According to my googling, we've had 3 inches of rainfall in certain parts of the city yesterday. Annually our average YEARLY rainfall is just slightly above 4 inches. This is not normal weather.

It wasn't at the top of my list for my favorite parts of the "Good ol' days", but now that you mention it, they really nerfed the Nesquick. I used to power small towns, and last time I had it I could barely wake up.

I live in Vegas too. Watched quite a few YouTube videos about the underground residents. They call severe flooding "The Wave". It's one of the most traumatic things they have to deal with. All complain about not being able to get an ID card because they don't have an ID, and without ID they can't get government support. I feel horrible for them and hope they stay safe.

They need *homes*. The average homeless person in the US has a job. They just don't have a home. And whatever mental illness anybody's got, it's worse when you don't have safe shelter and a place to sleep.

The average homeless person in the US has a job *at any given time* because most of the homeless are short-term. Something bad happened, and they lost where they were living. You might not even know one of your co-workers is homeless, they're normal. They get back on their feet and get somewhere else to live, while other people have a bad time and wind up short-term homeless next. The long-term homeless though are hopeless addicts and schizophrenics who need to be institutionalized.

As a former homeless person, who is from Las Vegas and it's where I endured homelessness, the reason people go into the sewers is to escape the actually literally murderous heat. Our mental health facilities are woefully lacking and run by for-profit health care, or "Christian" charities.

This isn't the same Doc I saw years ago but goddam, there are entire communities with shacks and all sorts of living places in those tunnels. I was always concerned about rain after seeing that and can understand the volunteers that try to help these folks.

When I lived in NYC there were a lot of people living in the train tunnels North off Harlem, at least. I think Amtrak forcibly evicted them all.

The lower forty-eight states of the US exist between 50 and 30 degrees longitude. That’s a massive swath of land. So climates very dramatically between north and south. What can be defined as the most arid desert part of Europe? Now take into consideration a Hurricane/Typhoon remnant hitting the area that would normally be experiencing Summer heat. Flash flooding and muddy conditions were definitely not expected nor planned for. Hundreds of past Burning Man events can be seen to compare.

Off and on. For instance Roosevelt and the New Deal did a lot to reverse it, which allowed the baby boomers to have it great (lots of social programs, very low unemployment rate, fair employment, etc.). Then they elected Reagan who made it all go to shit again.

One illness, one accident and you are out. Lack of healthcare and social security allow people to fall quickly. Lack of income and access to firearms make the transfer to crime just too easy. Self centered Americans think they'll always be healthy, happy, employed or successful in some way. Lack of open media and inability to speak other languages makes them easy to brainwash.
