Replace "times" with "of" in every math problem and this makes perfect sense. Also, remember that anything times anything can go in either order.

Imagine you goto a course in homedepot- and they teach you how to use a hammer. But not with a wall, not with wood, not with nails, just the theory behind the hammer. I was a math major in college and when I had to take the GMAT a couple years after graduation I had to study the math because I hadn't done it since like 9th grade. Calculus, linear algebra, I would have been fine

Neither of these is particularly nicer to deal with. If you really need to work this out without a calculator, it's more useful to see them both as:
14 * 30 ÷ 100
= 14 * 3 ÷ 10
= 42 ÷ 10
= 4.2

They really need to spend a lot more time teaching kids neat little tricks. Would kill a lot of hate for maths.
My teacher in elementary school was such a... teacher:/ when we were learning our times tables she never taught us that the 9 times table is the same as the 10 times table minus 1 'each times' and when me and a friend mentioned it in class she scolded us and told us that's an improper method and not to use it -.-
Right teach, and memorising is better. Fuck understanding.

Wow. I was expecting the anecdote to have some reason behind it, but this one is actually indefensible. When learning math there are often cases where an exercise is focused on teaching a specific method, so solving problems without it subverts the value of the lesson. In this case, she actively obstructs learning an insightful and powerful method.

yeah... she was the teacher that punished a classmate of mine for telling her she was wrong when se said you can't count below zero. (she had us write impossible in subtractions that would have gone negative)
And I appreciate the reasons to not teach negative numbers so soon, but heck lady if a kid mentions it don't kill it
