They are an important part of our lives. But WE ARE THEIR WHOLE LIFE. Make it count. Be a good parent to your pets. Love them every moment of every day, because they deserve it.

I got teary eyed yesterday thinking about a dog I had 30 years ago. Still miss him

They’re both here, but once I’m left behind, they will have their tributes somewhere on me, forever.
Fuck, I’m cutting onions just typing that they will be gone some day.
They’re the best. Always will be.

About equal at this point. She lived to about 12 and died about 12 years ago. I still have dreams where she comes home.

Too true. We just lost our cat after 12 years, I could have had ten times as long with him and it would never be enough

Darby, Birdie, Hazel and Pooka. All gone now, as well as the home we shared together. I live on the road now, and am happy, but there are times I wish I could buy a house again, just so I could have a couple of cats.

I lost my cat last Monday, he was 20. Such a sweet and loving boy, our bond was strong. I miss him so much and I wish he was still here, as selfish as it sounds after 20 years.

That's what I did after my cat died, a year after my tomcat died. I took a few weeks of me-time, but it was the best decision to give new cats a new life. They will never replace my former cats, never ever, but I do love them as well and am quite sure that my previous cats approve my decision ❤️

I still cry sometimes thinking of my late beloved dumbass Magic. That cat was part of my life from his birth when I was in middle school until he passed when I was... around 30? Time got blurry for various reasons.

Sometimes I swear I can feel him walking around on my bed when I try to sleep. Which is weird 'cause he never got on my bed when I was trying to sleep before, and yet.

I'm 37 now. I still miss him.

"Dumbass" is meant affectionately. This is a cat that would stand in the corner behind an open door, stare at the corner, and yell until I picked him up to get him out from behind the door. He even answered to "Dumbass" sometimes with a cheery "Mrew?"

He was the unseen but oft-heard mascot when I was streaming; he was loud enough that even if I wasn't speaking, voice detection would pick him up when he shouted from another room entirely. Chat took to responding "Hi, Magic!" when they heard him.

Sounds like a good cat to have had in your life. Glad you got so many years and good memories with him

@op, It's hard to believe just how much the death of a pet can crush you until it happens. Something about having spent SO much time with them and how they are a part of our emotional life. I can recommend https://petloss.com/ to start to get a handle on it. It won't be like a professional counseling session, more like an AA meeting.

Brosef... our beloved cat Wally died a few weeks ago after a long illness, followed by our other cat Bella in a horrible accident about a week later. They're the last thing I think about at night and the first thing I think about in the morning. I don't think I'll ever get over it.

What I mean to say is: I totally get it.

Here's the thing. You will get over it or, feel it in a different way. I cried every day for 2 weeks when my dog died. Then every other day, then once a week or when I was trying to sleep. It's been 10 years, occasionally I call the current dog the old name. But I'm not sad. I'm proud of our relationship and what that dog gave me during some dark times. You'll never forget, but the pain and loss will go away at some point. Muchas smoochas and hugs.

Oh thank you! Yeah it hits me hard sometimes and other times I'm totally fine. I definitely got some shit I need to work out.

It's "just" grief. Nothing wrong with you, except you loved something and it died. We put our family cat down like 14 years ago. I'm tearing up typing this. We were all standing around her as just went, and her last action on this Earth was to rest her chin in my hand, then let out her last breath.
