Damage to the Arecibo radio telescope earlier this year.
With cables so degraded, the telescope will be decommissioned, and its 57-year mission comes to an end. By deconstructing it, they can save the towers and nearby buildings. It has a 900-ton instrument platform suspended above, which they may sever the attached cables, and allow to crash down.
