Saw this post circulating Imgur today (link to @warmyourbeans post below) and wanted to add some info and context in case anyone else was interested in knowing more about this neat little bit of tech. This image is of the "Exo Prosthetic Leg" (designed by: William Root), it's a customizable 3D printed titanium prosthesis.
Using 3D scanning & MIT's Biomechatronic tech 'FitSocket' to map a residual limb allows for the prosthesis to accurately fit the intended wearer.
A customizable 3D model can then be rendered, and adjusted to the client's preference.
Dat wireframe tho....
The model is then 3D printed out of titanium dust using laser sintering to fabricate a lightweight, durable, biocompatible metal for the Prosthetic.

Amputation Tax

Did I get amputee taxed at the end of a post about amputees?!? “That’s not how any of this works!”

Does it crush easily?
TAKESHIKOVACHS
It’s kinda funny they shaped the calf area so large when his other leg has zero calf muscle or definition from the looks of it
Saigon333
Bioengineer: I threw in this sick definition on your prosthetic leg, so you can have some fitness goals. No charge.

Had to hit the back button for that Amputation tax. +1

Non-moving parts... I'll let the tris slide.

3D printed titanium alloy? That's got to cost an arm and a leg

I see what you did there http://discuss.fleetworkshop.org/uploads/db1714/original/2X/8/8fba89b58f9c3dcfe4675f184db07b7b9190b346.jpg

God forbid, but if I ever loose a limb I want one of these made for me.
Bound2Saturn
You can be like Raiden from mgs. I wonder if theyll give this stuff muscle fibers and make super humans
SirPandaLuna
This makes me want to cut my leg off like why the fuck not never gonna pull a ham string.
mburicao
Fill that leg with carne asada.

I love this tech. Unfortunately the access for most amputees is an impossible hurdle. We need an Elon for prosthetics next!
warmyourbeans
Thank you for posting this @OP! I'll edit my post to link to this one (if I can figure out how).
warmyourbeans
All done! Can you see the edit?
ZeroF0XX
Yeah, that's awesome man! Thanks for bringing this to my attention, it's really interesting (especially as an amputee myself)

Etherium limbs here we come

I took an AK-47 round to the hand a few years ago. It shattered my hand pretty bad and they had to remove the pinky & part of the metacarpal

Today I learned you can 3D print Titanium. That's absolutely badass!
Zahnradfee
Yeah, a variety of metals. But laser sintering is expensive. Not comparable to the "home 3D printer". https://youtu.be/yiUUZxp7bLQ

Any day you don't learn something is a day wasted. Good job on not wasting this day!
JabberMoxie
How long until someone can give my baby girl a new pinna (ear flap)?
C141Clay
She's a red shirt, she won't be around long...
JabberMoxie
It's a pleated skirt. It's the Uhura costume, actually. Has her rank on the sleeves. I'm just a bad photographer.
C141Clay
And I was kidding.., She's a good dog jabber, she'll live long and pupper.
JabberMoxie
It's cool. Everyone makes that joke. They just don't give you much room here for a lot of extra "lol" typing so I try to conserve space.
MrHaynies
Is it not structurally weak? I am ignorant of hoe strong the material is.
BananaSizeChart
"Hoe strong"
ZeroF0XX
The tensile strength of 3D printed titanium is ~ 830 mega pascals, or roughly ~120381.322 pounds-force per square inch (8463.64 kg/cm2).
nicetomeetyouimdad
Yeah but what about sheer strength and compression resistance?
awesomeinabox1234360
It's designed with trusses, so the vertical compression is transferred into the truss members. Some members are in tension and others are 1/
awesomeinabox1234360
In compression. Titanium has a very high yield strength in both tension and compression. It also(depending on tempering) has spring 2/
awesomeinabox1234360
Qualities. The only shear forces are at the ankle and knee but the structure is dense enough to bare the weight without failure 3/3
ZeroF0XX
By comparison, stainless steel's yield strength is around 520 MPa, cast iron ~130 MPa https://simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tensile_strength
mikeatc
TDL: yes strong
ashackatak
So much stronger than my weak ass legs

Use a term we can relate to! Can I hit it with a baseball bat and do no damage?
IOnlyPostThatOneGorillaGif
i think so.
Saigon333
A baseball bat would probably break it. Then again, a baseball bat would probably break your flesh leg, so it's a wash.
teakasaurus
Stronger than steel.
nouseforaheart
Five strong, maybe even six
Minnakht
Bone also ~130, if I'm reading that right?
ArchCypher
That's ultimate yield strength, which is about 200MPa for cast iron. But you're correct that bone has an ultimate yield of 130 MPa.
Minnakht
I suppose it's difficult to pull bone in such a way that it'd permanently deform but not break. It isn't ductile like metal.
ArchCypher
The distinction here is that if you take cast iron past 130 MPa it will suffer permanent deformation, but not completely yield until 200 MPa
