MTG mana philosophies!
In Magic the Gathering spells are casted using mana. There are five different kinds (or colors) of it, each representing a certain strategy, mindset or even philosophy by wich the player (referred often as Planeswalker) using that color intends to win the match. Each deck (or Library) can be formed using any combination of said colors, but let'focus a bit on what these colors stand for individually. (DIsclaimer: I won't explain how to play in any shape or form. Tha would take ages and result quite boring for imgur, and there are many guides online anyway)

Colors can be used in pairs and even in this case something can be said about how two different philosophyes can merge and be functional in a single deck. The names for this kind of pairings come from the Guilds of Ravnica. Ravnica is a city (and a plane) in which these Guilds (each representing a pairing of mana colors) try to coexist in a balance created by the magical contract called the "Guildpact". We won't go over the lore, however. Keep in mind that the pairings can still use mechanics specific to one of the two colors, and I will cover only the mechanics specific of that pairing as a whole, as I already described the colours singularly.

Black mana, bitch.
Black is about amorality (not to be confused with immorality), ambition and the strive for personal power. Black sees the world as it is: a plain reality in which power dictates who is the master and who is the slave, and Black will do anything to obtain that power for itself. Black is obsessed with power, and has no bonundaries in its quest to obtain it. Anything can be, and will be, sacrificed as long as Black gets what it wants, with complete disregard to rules, conventions and its's own self. Greed and amorality makes for a mind that is not afraid of dealing with creatures and actions that others may deem as disgusting, immoral or dangerous, because, to Black, here is no such thing. To put it bluntly, Black is selfish and is very honest about it. Black can be often interbreted as the "bad guy", but this honesty and the lack of duplicity question this interpretation. Black isn't inherently bad, it just seeks its own goals, and will not esitate to do "good" actions if they contribute to his personal gain.
Removal
Black sees no value on life itself, and is very happy to destroy lives if they keep him from reaching greater power. Black's amorality makes it the most homicidal color in Magic, with plenty of removal spells that often do not spare Black's own creatures. After all, Black has no simpathy even for its own kind. Enchantments and artifacts, however, are spared: they are pure magic and do not carry weak points to expliot, and Black can only harm things subject to decay.
Graveyard interaction.
The graveyard is usually where spells go when they are destroyed (or finish their effect) to almost never return. Black, however, does not like rules, and will often use the graveyard as just unother resource to achieve power. This makes Black the color with the most intense graveyard interaction in the game, rewarding Black the fame as "obsessed with death". Some Black libraries are even built to send the planeswalker's own creatures in the graveyard in order to cast them for cheaper using spells as "Rise from the Grave".
Elusive creatures
Black disregard for morality and rules makes it so that Black likes to blay dirty. As a result, a lot of Black creature have abilities that allow for non-confrontational damage-dealing. Fear, for instance, used to be an exclusively black ability, and is still mostly used by black creatures.
Everything is a resource
Black's greed is so powerful that anything can become a resource that allows for greater power. Life points, creatures, card advantage become merely goods of excange. Black can do anything, as long as it can pay for it, and if it can then it will, because Black has no regard for anything else than power. Demonic Pact is a clear example of how Black can even put itself on a timer in order to obtain significant advantages.
Final disclaimer: take theese kind of posts (which I plan to complete with all the color wheel) as a very broad generalization. MTG is a very complex game, and colors themselves are very much flexible, however I just thought that some of you might enjoy this kind of perspective over the game.

Ever since Siege Rhino rotated out, Languish has been a staple in pretty much every black Control deck. -4/-4 ain't nothin' to fuck with.
