A question I ponder often as a father of a 2yo. It made me reflect upon my own childhood memories. I'd imagine it's almost like remembering a dream... I believe you remember moments, flashes and the general color of things figuratively speaking. However I firmly believe that depending on if it is positive or negative it will lay the base for your future interests.. e.g. how you feel about being in nature in this case

Absolutely. Even our pets remember or at least associate joy and fear and other emotions from past experiences their whole lives. So it makes sense that tiny humans would as well, even if they don't distinctly remember the specifics

My kids are now 11 & 13 and donât remember the drives and hikes, but they love nature and have a warm glow when they think of their early years. Not sure if that applies to everyone.

The likes of Spotify have given us so much access to any music we want that it's difficult for new artists to break into the market in any big way because they're competing with the entire back catalogue. Only the stuff with the broadest appeal and marketing behind it can even get heard. It takes effort to find anything else so only the kids really into their music listen to niche tracks.

I've had the opposite experience - I'm old and I basically didn't listen to music at all for 15 years because I was tired of the old stuff and hated the new stuff. Then I got a spotify account and it found me a bunch of modern, less mainstream artists that appeal to me as well as my teenagers.

I mean, I find a lot of the radio hits to be rubbish now, even more so than in the 90s. I kind of agree with #1's assessment. But I also love a lot of new and younger artists that aren't radio stars. Things are better in that regard at least, that we aren't stuck with what the radio or MTV gives us. That's probably why I don't listen to a lot of my 90s favs, except for the occasional nostalgia vibes. Newer artists that I love, I imagine I will be loving them a lot longer.

I'm 40 and listen to a lot of new music, especially rap and hip hop. The mumble rap phenomena was real and was really bad. Fetty Wap and onwards was trash. Drake is mostly trash. Their has been GREAT hip hop in the past 10 years that have a _similar_ style but WAY better lyricism, e.g was listening to Mac Miller last night, RIP.

People also forget how shit most of the music actually was. I don't mean just for our generation but every generation. Only the good stuff sticks around. Comparing the average of now to the greatest hits of the last several decades is both silly and weird.

Yep, and that has been true of all generations. So many people think of the 60s and 70s as the golden age of music, but there were a lot more songs that were just plain bad. Record labeld routinely released albums with two or three single-worthy songs surrounded by eight or nine other tracks that were just filler.

That's something we're going to see a lot less of - the more we move towards purchasing single songs and streaming only what's popular, the less the not-so-popular songs will be heard. Fewer albums, more singles.
