Man do I love me some open low pitch strings being played together with higher pitched ones in that tribal/folk kind of way. Wish I knew how to do that sub-octave stuff with my voice.
Watch youtube tutorials! I started out wanting to learn metal growls and then just tried different ways to make strange growly noises, before long I had figured out throat singing and overtones, which are all weirdly related.
I was hanging out with friends a few years back. We all play guitar and other various instruments and we were just messing around. We starting playing "You Shook Me" by AC/DC, and I stepped up to the mic and did my best Brian Johnson. After that one song, I was literally hoarse with a raspy voice for several days.
I've uh got a voice for soft songs. And sad songs, somebody get me a guitar I'll play Moonshine (song incoming) I'm not belting shit. Unless it's 25 or 6 to 4 when I'm driving and it comes on the radio https://youtu.be/pxr22ih0r9A?si=gF3THjkSHrewH0pV
Yeah warming up the vocal cords is a real thing. Even Brian would have killed his voice if he didnt warm up prior to a show. And like others said, that is a very specific way to sing and hard to learn i imagine..
True, they all have their place and that place will never be on anything I listen to. I know some people enjoy those styles but I detest them with every fiber of my being.
I've always wondered this with metal singers, when they go from absolutely belting some growls from the depths of hell straight into normal voice singing how tf do the mic levels manage to keep up? Nik Nocturnal did a show with slaughter to prevail and he said when he tried to scream into Alex's mic it was barely auidble as Alex screams so loud, but what if Alex was to sing normally? (not that he does). Lorna shore is maybe a better example.
There's a voice actor famous for breaking mics. Toshiyuki Morikawa, he was typically voicing the hot-blooded protagonist, and that naturally involved a lot of screaming.
Voice acting also involves a lot of transient sounds - exclamations and the like - that move more air than screaming or yelling and can rate in the SPL range of a small-caliber gunshot. Throw that kind of air pressure spike into a 1mm thick diaphragm and it’s gonna get busted.
True, though you can wreck that muscle group real good too if you aren’t careful. I’d rather pay the $500 to replace a bust condenser mic capsule (contains the diaphragm) over trying to navigate the US health system with an injury that is career-killing for a vocalist but the medical system thinks is superfluous.
And a mic that isn’t a delicate large-diaphragm model, or a dainty ribbon outside of the R121/4038 ranges. I suppose you could belt into an M160 safely, too, since that thing puts up with brass which is just demonic sonics.
You can 100% belt into a normal large-diaphragm condenser. You might clip the internal circuitry without a pad, but you won't wreck the diaphragm with voice only.
Most modern condensers can handle it, yes, with the exception of a few vintage-reissue types with specific capsules. You can absolutely wreck a diaphragm - especially NOS stuff - with close plosives from belting, and this comes from industry experience. I won’t let anyone belt or scream into my 47 - hell, if I sing loud I’m at least six inches off and using a Stedman- because cracking sputtered Mylar is expensive and unnecessary. My TLM170R does 136 I think, and is an LDC, so I grab that.
You can still overload the fuck out of the mic itself if it’s not rated for that kind of SPL, or overdrive the input stage of a preamp before the gain circuit. I have a U47 that’s so hot off the PSU that I need an inline pad between the power supply and half of my preamps. The Avalon can take the load but turns it into tube saturation which isn’t always desirable. If I’m tracking an unpredictable vocalist, I’m using something I know is safe like a TLM170 or the ol’ SM7.
As someone who had to rewatch the song to have any idea what you're talking about, most likely not. My vague recollections were exclusively the sweet sweet baritone, and "Chocolate Rain!"
It's honestly so overused. It has its place, but when you're singing a well known song and you give it a "remix" by noodling, it gets cringey. Knew a girl in highschool, amazing vocalist, until she got into the pop-y vocals. Her rendition of the national anthem was comical, and I'm pretty sure the chorus teacher banned her from doing it again lol
That makes sense, since it's a competition showing of is to be expected. That said I can't stand those shows so I understand someone not liking it, just saying that's probably the most appropriate place for it so it's hard to blame the individual. Hate the game not the player.
Pretty sure they do that, because they have what, roughly 1 minute to convince the judges that they have the skills and vocal control to do MORE than just that one song style.
They usually refer to "90 seconds", however you'll notice that singers that get no turns at all usually seem way shorter, and that's because the no chair turns are filler, edited down to fill time and inserted anywhere. You'll also notice while the coaches may say "I didn't turn around because my team is full," they NEVER comment like that (with reference to a specific "time" in the audition process) for no-chairs. They're told not to (or it's edited out) because again, the no-chairs are filler.
I have the vaguest half formed memory of like a cartoon or TV show or something doing this with the extra long 'seeeeee' and then the character's voice breaks, they make a choking noise, and then something else background noise-ish happens, and now it's gonna drive me *nuts* that I cannot place this percentage of a memory that your comment dredged up, so thanks for that!
I've always enjoyed singing, but it's definitely a hidden talent. When I'm alone I can belt it out like nobody's business. The second I know someone is listening it's like I feel my voice and demeanor change, I go from seasoned vocalist to scared 4th grader at talent show in an instant. Alcohol helps, and I'm really trying to get over my stage fright by not stopping singing when I get to stop lights, etc. It sucks bc my family is known in our community for singers and I haven't sang in public >
A good vocal coach can help you utilize that talent reliably, if you want. A surprising amount of this is that we physically react to nervousness and anxiety, which makes it hard-to-impossible to sing properly. I’ve got a couple techniques I use before hitting a big stage, EMDR being one of them, otherwise it doesn’t matter how practiced I am, if I tighten up from nerves then it’s a high chance of a shitshow.
since my voice broke during the high part of "Oh Holy Night" when I was 13 or so. The "Christians" in the audience thought it was hilarious and I haven't made so much as a squeak in public in 14 years.
Same!! I cant even let my husband hear me! He has occasionally when he gets home early and i am in the shower belting it out, but just singing straight up in front of anyone terrifies me. You summed it up perfectly. My ex was the only person that's ever actually heard me sing as an adult, and now it just makes me cringe that I let him in on that part of myself.
