COVID-19: Six years ago, on December 30, 2019, Chinese doctor Li Wenliang issued a warning on WeChat about a mysterious virus that had infected several patients at his hospital in Wuhan. He was one of the first to raise the alarm about the dangers of COVID-19.
Silenced by the authorities and summoned for "spreading rumors," he died 39 days later from the disease in the hospital.

I was in China when this was happening. It was a scary time. Those messages were getting repressed, but new ones kept popping up until they couldn't contain it and finally admitted what happened. Dr. Li is a hero and should be remembered.

I got it early Jan 2020. It nearly killed me. Live with permanant scarring in both lungs and got diagnosed with COPD two years ago. Damage was so severe, they were checking me for lung cancer a year ago and I have to get a CT scan every year for three more years. Uncle, best friend's dad, and two neighbors all died of it.

November of that year I had a roommate when I lived in Oregon who worked in a shipping and receiving dock that had lots of international trade, lots from China. I was out of state for thanksgiving week and I recall him texting me that he might be dying, horrible lung issues that docs couldn't diagnose, even giving him treatments for mold exposure with no luck. In hindsight it had to be covid. Glad I was out out of town.

I was one of the first cases in my state, originally couldn't be diagnosed until it as confirmed elsewhere. It basically erased the entire warehouse. We all had it, my first time was easily one of my worst out of the 3 years (now in my 4th year when I get it the doctors tell me I'm lucky that I'm not having a seizure I react so heavily) and thought I was gonna die too.

Wow, that was a great read. Y’know, I think I’m right there with you on feeling grateful. I got sick in the very beginning of 2021; however, I too was smoking a lot of pot. The strains I had at the time were definitely higher Cbd levels too. Never thought I could be so grateful to Jesus for a plant. I absolutely believe in the medicinal qualities of marijuana.

We might have died had we not been smoking so much weed!!!! I’ve since quit tho. I miss it, but ultimately I had to stop, I’m scared for OPD, my grandad died from it and you can get that from weed as well as from tobacco (he got it from cigarettes). Plus I had to actually deal with anxiety sooner or later. I’m glad I quit. Almost 20 years on it. Helped me a lot, not just bc of covid. But I’m glad I’m free now.

I remember seeing the posts on here about the extra hospitals being built essentially overnight and the makeshift morgues because the bodies were piling up so fast. Thinking "Man, if that gets out of China we're all fucked." The dread I felt hearing about the first confirmed case in the US is something that will stay with me forever.

All the advice about healthy living is great, but you hit the nail on the head: 1) vaccines, 2) face masks, 3 )social distancing, and 4) hand hygiene are the biggest tools for combating infectious disease in general. I'm sure that's accurate from a virologist's view, however, my ailing mother has had the same flu for the last 5-6 weeks, confirmed by hospital testing and most of that time spent in a skilled nursing unit at a nursing home. (She may be over it now?.... her last test was late last week... but she had double pneumonia as of last week, as well.) My mother and siblings are nurses and none of us had ever heard of a flu lasting so long. I was told her doctor was really surprised as well.
