This was the "Father's Day Flood" in Houghton, Michigan in 2018. We had unprecedented amounts of rain (some calculations estimated 1-inch of rain per minute for several minutes) the night before causing massive flooding, mass wasting and erosion. There was one death associated with the storm and wide spread damage throughout the Keweenaw.

Huron Creek, seen in this video, runs past the Taco Bell and under Sharon Ave. The creek was swollen at bank full stage and flowing rapidly causing under cutting and bank erosion. Taco Bell lost most of its parking lot and their sigh even fell into the creek. Sharon Ave not seen but a few meters off camera was also washed out.

1 inch per minute has happened, but not in Michigan and never more than 1 minute in a row in the US. The US record rainfall over 5 minutes is 2.03 inches. The flood you referenced was 5-8" over 3-5 hours. There was one rain guage that showed 1.75 inches per minute but was later proven to be broken.

You're not wrong per se, but it's more complicated. The gauge wasn't broken, but its ability to measure that volume is limited & therefore its record of this event is dubious. The gauge located at the Keweenaw Rsearch Center, is a double bucket tipping type & is physically incapable of operating at that rate & volume. That doesn't mean it didn't rain more than 1-inch per minute, it means we don't know precisely how much fell in those most intense few minutes shortly after 2:30 AM, Jun 17 2018

I agree. Global climate change is going to bring extremes meteorological events that exceed historical records in many places. My use of the term "unprecedented" was relative to this location in northern Michigan, not in a global context nor Australia. Your response seemed a little annoyed by that, so I wanted to clarify.
