Starting college in 1993 the 8 bit byte was well set. However, a word (2 bytes) was still up for interpretation and could be 8 or 16 bits.

I've generally heard 4 or 5 bytes for a word depending on the underlying system

It wasn't until 1993 that a byte was standardized as 8 bits, before then it could be 6 or 9 as was most common in the 60s
