Purple marks episode 4 of the Etch A Sketch color of the day! It's sure been fun to share some of my most obscure and eclectic Etch A Sketch variants with all of you. The electronic components inside my Zooper Sounds Etch A Sketch are unfortunately fried but I can assure that the sounds were most definitely Zooper.

How functional are heart shaped knobs for artists?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are definitely more of a novelty than a utility, heh. Honestly easier to use than the teeny tiny knobs on my necklace etch tho! Overall I tend to avoid drawing on that size in general tho heh

But is there a blue eyes white dragon to go with the dark magician?

Yes! /gallery/LixwbI0

I was about to go to sleep, now I'm wide awake googling etch'a'sketches as I had no idea so many variations existed, and that's just one colour, which you happen to own. Pretty cool.

I've been waiting for purple! đź’ś

How much storage space does all this require? Must be a warehouse of Etch-A-Sketches out the back of OPs house.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm actually in the process of organizing my collection, and can confirm that the full collection essentially fits in ~8 small Home Depot moving boxes, and the bulk units I use for work all fit on a 18x48x72" metal storage rack!

Me, when I’ve misplaced my dark magician for a tournament: Hold on, does anyone have an etch-a-sketch?!

1 year ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

…you’ve just got the wheels in my head spinning away on a TCG video game where instead of collecting cards and building a deck you have to live sketch the cards and how well you draw them increases their power. Like, you aren’t drawing whatever card you’re making up; there IS a card library in the game, you just have to have their designs committed to memory and be able to sketch them under time pressure.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

So, you're saying that in order to play a card, you first have to draw it from the deck?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damnit I hadn’t even noticed that pun.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The accuracy measuring question is really secondary to the gameplay question. Can you just choose which card to sketch next? If so, you lose the entire deck building aspect that is central to TCGs.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My understanding is you’d draw the card from the deck (draw is already confusing) and that card would already have a template of what it was SUPPOSED to be. The image portion is blank but the title is “Dark Magician”, it’s up to the player to then go “aha, okay dark magician is a purple armour dude with staff, I can do that”. Then the game goes “okay, purple? Check. Green staff? Oh it’s blue, that’s reduced points” etc

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cause yeah if you could decide your top deck every turn from the entire pool of cards available it would be a nightmare to balance haha

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So my thought was actually that there wouldn’t be any deck building or card draw for what’s in your hand - it literally would just be “draw any card you can in the time alotted”. But again this was just the flash of inspiration that came to me, doesn’t mean it can be balanced. But you could balance it against things like… more powerful cards are more complicated / have higher requirements for accuracy / have more elements/layers that need to be included in the drawing, so that you aren’t just

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Okay main question, how’d you score accuracy? Is it like, a line drawing closeness test (like the Mario party minigame where you have to carve out a picture of Boo) or would it be a more advanced image detection system for locating key objects like “this appears to be a staff, this appears to be a hat, this appears to be a red gem. This is a good representation of Flame Sorcerer”?

Off the top of my head, absolutely no clue. This may actually be a circumstance where the algorithms for generating AI art, like Stable Diffusion, might actually be useful as a means of calculating a “proximity” between what was sketched and cards in the deck. In theory you could have a human referee but obviously that’s not scalable, plus you run the risk of subjective evaluations of art. I never said this game idea was PRACTICAL, only that it popped into my head.

Actually, after thinking about it a moment longer, and taking a cue from the Etch a Sketch… imagine for a moment that the drawings were only black and white, and fairly low resolution. It would be easy-enough to calculate a Hamming distance between what was sketched and a particular card’s artwork. Conceptually, you could scale that up with higher resolutions, and more colours (thought might need some fuzzy logic for distances between various colours), but that could be a way of doing it.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You could also have a version of the artwork that is a “full render” version that people see, which is a full digital painting made by an artist. But in the backend it could be represented by one or more substantially simplified versions - fewer colours, lower resolution, etc. and it’s actually those low-fidelity renders that the accuracy is judged against. The idea being that a low-fidelity render is actually easier to recreate accurately.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

To build off the Hamming distance idea… I’m not an expert in compression or cryptography or self-correcting codes, but there may be applicable algorithms or theories from those disciplines that could be useful for assessing the “accuracy” of a sketch.
