There's a "sweet spot" at the base of every branch called the branch collar. A cut made just outside the collar will seal efficiently. 1/2

Oak is good for campfires and wood stoves. It burns for a long time.

Yes. Pine is normally used for flooring. Oak is for very solid furniture. Balsa for those shitty wood plane models that break in 2 seconds.
