I had these for a few years now. Decided to give them a half ass restore or treatment or a cleaning... whatever.
Everyone told me vinegar. I figure any sort of food safe corrosive would work. Mixed it all 50/50. With water and Boiled for a bit 40 minutes.
I used this cleaning corrosive that a farmer uses to clean self feeders for his animals. Long as ya clean the surfaces good after it's OK. no way I was boiling vinegar or any other cleaning corrosive in my house So I made a fire out side.
Worked pretty fucken good. But I did use like five SOS pads scrubbed like fucken mad to get them here.
The Dutch oven turned out good too. I decided to make some stew.
Wood stove is all I got here for heat so use the stove alot to cook.
Always smells dope in here when I do.
Made some bannok and cooked in my make shift wood stove top even. Was very good.
I haven't lived here for a few winters so my cast iron stuff was very neglected.
For anyone curious I don't know what the chemical was called. But I'd recommend just using vinegar or some sort of food corrosive. Or citric acid like someone just mention in the comments.
I wonder if Orange juice would work or just boil away really fast?

I found a Dutch oven buried in the woods and keep it. I haven't cleaned the rust off yet but I'm stoked for the day I use it

I'd recommend taking the little wire handle off first if you plan on leaving in a +900C fire like I did. got a little bent out of shape lol

Citric acid? You can buy it online, etc. Recommended for removing scale, etc. and should be pretty harmless.

Nice! Thanks

Just pop it in the dishwasher. Good as new.

Orange Juice would probably be terrible. The sugar would likely burn and just cake everything in gunk.
OCTAVlAN
Good point with the sugar. Never thought of that!

But damn. Stew cooked in a cast iron dutch oven on a wood-burning stove. That just sounds GOOOOOD!
OCTAVlAN
And yes.... it was excellent.

My wife likes a good Dutch oven
