Norway is a model country in a lot of ways. Credit where it is due. But also keep in mind the work that needs to be done. Their efforts and infrastructure are largely funded by North Sea oil, and their economy continues to be very centered on extraction, processing, and export of petroleum and natural gas. Everyone should go green, but it’s a lot easier with funding, and if funded by fossil fuels, you aren’t doing the world that big a favor.

According to Gemini A.I., the Tesla Model Y is most popular EV in Norway. The current U.S. price for the Model 'Y' is 41 K for the base rear wheal drive model, and 59 K for the all wheel driver version. I guess it makes sense so many people are dropping over 40K for electric cars since Norway has significantly higher average per capita income than the U.S.

Well we tend to keep our cars for 15-20 years.. Not like I believe a car bought in 2026 will last that long. Also most people apparently want to keep their second car an ICE model.

Yes, and Norway is still using it's sovereign oil fund to pay for a lot of it's people's needs. Their population is also mostly homogeneous and far smaller than most other developed countries. Not saying this is any less of an accomplishment, but it's not the same when talking about a country the size and diversity like the US.

JFC. I just asked for a simple estimate. :) Norway was rich before oil. USA has always had higher GDP p. Capita than Norway and yet your system sucks. California is trying, but only barely because everything that might improve everyone's life is considered communism. USA has decades of propaganda to roll back, sorry.

If you took all the copper, lithium, nickel, etc. on the planet, you wouldn't have enough to make enough EVs for everyone who needs them. You also need transmission lines for the electricity, which is easier in a small country like Norway. It's just a much easier task to get Norway all driving EVs than a large country like the US or China. Need a better solution.

Before 1% is not significant as there is barely any growth so I only took the part between 1% and 32%. That part is pretty straight with a little curve between 1% and 12%. Also not big enough to influence the estimate

M8, even setting aside the cherry-picking that you're doing by cutting out the first part, the average slope of the second half of that segment (20 percentage points over 5 years) is nearly double the first half (11 percentage points over 5 years). This is not remotely a straight line.

And? It obviously works. Having been an EV owner for 10 years now I wouldn't willingly go back to a gas car; so if the government wanted to incentivize it more I'm fine with that. Better use of my tax dollars than of the bullshit I've seen it spent on.

They also have a grid that's 90% hydropower, 10% wind. So it more or less makes sense.
EVs make less sense to me in, say, Wyoming, where the grid is 60% fucking coal and actually puts out more CO2 than an oil plant would.

They have a grid that sucks and wouldn't work at all if it wasn't for Sweden and they put a cap on the price per kWh which is subsidised through selling their oil.

Granted it's better to replace cars where it has an immediate impact first, but electric means great flexibility. An ICE doesn't significantly change its emissions per km for its entire lifetime.

I still prefer a hybrid. Part of that is lack of infrastructure, but the other part is that I can drive 5 hours in almost any direction and still be in Texas, which admittedly is it's own problem.
Then it's the 20-30 minutes for a fast charger or hours for a home one.
I can get 42 mpg on my hybrid and a fillup only takes 3 minutes and gas stations are easy to find. Maybe if I was in a deep urban environment with limited travel - but then why have a car at all?

Its a mix and match of arguments: after a 5 hour drive a 20 min break is not so bad, and 5 h at 85 can be done electric. While your low mpg only lasts the first half to an hour and than you drive a very heavy car with a ordinary gas guzzler. At that speed my gas guzzler does 48 cause its a lightweight. So even for 5 h distances only electric could be better, only gas good and hybrid takes the worst out of both worlds and combines it...and if one motor strikes car wont move....like technical issu

The home charging isn't really an issue, that goes on when you sleep most likely. My car can take 22kW from a home charger, not that I have service that capable, but I'm only installing a 4.2kW charger, I've done the math and it'll perfectly suit our beeds and then some.
Anyway, there are EVs with range extenders available now, basically an EV with a generator built in.

Texas has Buc-ee's all over the place, and they have level 3 chargers. Last time I topped up there, I had plenty of time to go inside, use the bathroom, pick up some lunch, stretch my legs.
Wal-Mart is installing level 3 chargers at a fast clip, and those stores are everywhere.
All of the charging problems are temporary and getting better, even despite the current administration.

I did a 6500km road trip two years ago in my EV; it was actually nice to stop every 300km/3 hours for 15 minutes to stretch, walk around, get a snack, use the washroom. A few times we stopped in small towns that we normally would have just driven passed, topped up while wondering around for a bit. The journey is part of the adventure and so is stopping to explore.

Infrastructure can definitely be an issue (it's mostly a solved issue in Norway), but once that's in place, "I need a 20-minute charge" tends to overlap pretty nicely with "I could use a 20-minute coffee/food break".
But yeah, Norway isn't a big country (and being so far north we look much bigger on the most common map projections)

Still takes 18 or so hours going from end to end. But there are EVs with 800+ km range available now getting pretty close to many ICE cars.

Eh, I've done multiple 26 hour drives before. Driving from my current house to my parent's home takes 18 hours and I've done that a dozen times - and so have they.
Back in college it took 16 hours to drive to Daytona Beach for spring break and coincidentally, 16 hours to get back again, and 12 hours to New Orleans, and I made those trips a few times.
The US is quite big, and if you have a car, most of it isn't ~too far away.

It's not just Texas. The entire US needs to do it. My sister lives in California. My parents are in Illinois. My wife's relatives are in Indiana. We have other family in New Jersey and Tennessee.
It won't help much if there's no charging station available on the Oklahoma turnpike or driving over the rockies. It's not like I can bring an emergency tank of electricity with to give me an extra 200 miles of range.
What we really need though is some of that charge-while-driving infrastructure.

And the economy of the USA is almost 60x that or Norway. And Norway isn't small. And quite mountainous. The fact remains, Norway invested, and the US didn't.

And, oil revenue as a percent of gdp is 6+% in Norway. Vs 0.67% in the USA. So oil is a much bigger part of the economy in norway

since batteries have a significant life time, extreme cost to replace, buying a used electric car can be a gamble (bad battery). Replacement of said battery runs in the +10k.

Right. Batteries, when taken care of will die gradually. Improper usage, and abuse will degrade at increased rates. How does one assure proper use from previous owner?

There are services that can test the battery and some used car dealerships do this and let you know the results before buying.

That battery thing has largely turned out to be false. Early Nissan Leaf models are pretty much the only one with battery issues. Like almost every manufacturer gives 8 years 100k miles battery warranties. Toyota gives 10 years 1 million kms battery warranty (they use CATL batteries). Obviously some batteries are going to fail, but so do drivetrains for no good reason, or the entire car catches fire or whatever. Buying used is always a risk of a total loss.
