I've always struggled creating art. I have a creative mind, but when it came to putting said creativity on paper or the screen...37 years of nothing. But I've recently picked up pixel art and after some trial runs which I posted in a few discord groups, one of them got enough attention that I got asked if I take commissions.
I answered I wasn't sure but could always see what was possible, and that got the ball rolling. And now that it's finished, I got a second one in the pipeline, and I might even get involved with a pixel art game development. It's all happening so fast and I'm just bouncing in excitement here!
Kabloop
As someone who also makes pixel art... you're getting paid?! But seriously, the city scape looks great!
AutoFox
I love pixel art! I got into making custom videogames sprite sheets way back in my teens; some of my very old sprite comics are probably still floating around, but y'know, maybe don't look for those. Still dabble occasionally, really need to do more!
Mithim
That's awesome, congrats!
Morganelefay
Thank you, still all too giddy with excitement!
davesaint01930
Congrats. As an artist, myself, my first commission was exciting
zibble
Is it hard putting in pixels one by one into the painting? Seems like it'd take a really long time. :P
Morganelefay
It would, but there's ways to work around that ;) The real time killer is putting in all the smaller details.
ImightbeArabbitOneDay
Awesome!
spinbutton3
Yay to you!
teardropivyyearofthetiger
I do pixel art- but we call it cross stitch *giggles”
z5kcfthzvp1
Dude…that’s so good!!
MioTaalas
Great!
Ability to do pixel art is dying because aaaaaaa games don't require it anymore -> not seen as a career path.
All the luck to you and enjoy what you're doing!
Morganelefay
Thank you! And yeah I don't really think of it as a career path myself but who knows, if I keep at it...
dasklaus
Which is a pity because so often, pixel art looks better! Unless you have a huge budget, pixel art will likely end up prettier than if you try to make it 3d.
YesImADogPerson
I love it
blubblublubwhat
That’s awesome, congratulations!!
BroodingBlackwood
That's awesome! Congratulations! I love doing pixel art, it's probably the most relaxing style of art. Best of luck on the game development! :)
Morganelefay
It is indeed far more relaxing than I ever expected. Never thought I'd have the patience for it but now...
ThisBlueEye
oh nice bro! I'm about to be hiring some pixel artists for a project lmk if you feel like hearing about it.
Morganelefay
I'd be interested in it, but I'm still very much a novice so I can't guarantee anything right now.
Thojira
that's pretty nice art you got there, good luck for your future endavors
Morganelefay
Thank you kindly ^_^
Cookie0fPower
Yay!

Little piece of criticism if you allow it: not pixel enough. So many pixels that it could almost just be drawn. On first glance it looks just normally drawn, since the pixel density is so high. There is a point where pixel art stops being pixel art and just becomes digital art.
Scaramucci
It's not that dense, though? Like the slopes on the roof are only 3 pixels high.
JoVaLDrawsShittudes
Apart from that, looks really amazing and I love the "fade" you made the buildings do. Keep it up! ❤️
Morganelefay
Thank you, I appreciate the criticism. Perhaps it's not the type of pixel art one thinks of when looking at games that employ it, but seeing the people who are interested in it, it may yet be an interesting niche regardless :)
Jherden
Congrats!
Drix1942
One of my first "pixel art" type thing I made on MS Paint. It's E.T. and Elliott. :) I call it "pixel art" because I zoomed in and dotted every little pixel while drawing them and the bike.
Morganelefay
It looks great, and easy to see what it is the moment you zoom in!
Drix1942
ScratchGryph
Awesome! I love pixelart.
KingSwing
How do we reach out with commissions?
Morganelefay
You can reach me at my discord: MorganeLeFay. I can't guarantee if I'm able to take on what you have in mind though, so that would need to be worked out. But it's always worth a shot!
Jherden
Unable to message or add you on discord. 😅
Morganelefay
Oh woops, I had it set to server members & friends of friends only. It should be fixed now, thank you for alerting me!
KingSwing
Exciting! Honestly, I just like supporting artists. Especially when they're just starting to get into it.
Morganelefay
In case you tried to add me on Discord; I had the settings set up wrong, should be fixed now.
Klpincoyo
Love this for you!! I stumbled into an artsy career in much the same way, and it delighted me to no end. Congrats to you!
fantasypeddler
Keep focusing on the excitement and joy. Congrats.
eslachance
Be careful with game studios promising future money or stocks in maybe what might be successful. It's important to set expectations and make proper contracts so that you don't get screwed.
Morganelefay
Yea, I'm just looking at a fangame now; nothing big or anything. I'm not quite on the level needed for a proper game, so that bridge will be crossed when we get there.
fskn
Hey, congrats. I do dabble with pixel art too, but never worked professionally with it. I do want to make an NES game, eventually, though.
Morganelefay
I'd hardly call myself "going professional" as of right now - it's a hobby that is developing and who knows where it'll take me. Baby steps and all that. Hope you can make your dream of making a NES game come true!
Inarticulated
If you got paid for it, you're doing it professionally.
Morganelefay
Suppose that's true, in a sense. Guess I see it more as "actively making a career out of it" rather than the stumbling into things I do now, heh.
Kehy
A side job is still a job. Be proud
rusrsdude
Can't wait to see your game, hope you have fun with it!
KilliK69
how do you learn pixel art? where do you start from?
mikeatike
Start with pixels, work your way up to art.
Morganelefay
I started by recreating some things. Get a feel for the tools. Experiment a little bit with tiny canvases and then enlarging the result. I find FireAlpaca to be a great program to get started with as it's free and easy to grok. And I started on 16x16 pixel canvases.

Had the same question, this video has 1.2 million views, so it's probably a good starting point https://youtu.be/lfR7Qj04-UA
necroticon
Bit by bit :D
ccrushh
well, you have to start at square one
n0gal
Honestly? Start by stealing. Copy how to draw MegaMan or something, then try turning him into another character in the same style. Look at a tilemap used by a game you like, copy 1/2 tiles in the terrain, then try to make the rest yourself. Etc.
n0gal
Also, study this thing and try to make something that makes sense to you with the same information. https://michagamedev.files.wordpress.com/2018/02/image6.png?w=768 Yes that's the only documentation on the subject.
antzinmyeyesjohnson
Anywhere we can see your work?
Morganelefay
Right now, the cityscape above is the only one I'm happy enough to fully share in public. I'll be building a gallery over the upcoming time.

Morganelefay
It's a very...soothing way of art, if you ask me. You're more than welcome to hit me up if you feel like it; my discord is Morganelefay if you prefer.
