That last image is not how a linear magnetic accelerator works. The first image is more accurate.

The last gif is not how Gauss rifles work. More like the first one, but with electromagnets. Very different principals at play here.

yup, these look like neodymium permenant magnets

Magnetism is a stronger force than gravity. Now you know that too.

What is this from? It looks kind of interesting.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Spectral. It looks nice even if it's not that great. Still solid B movie.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Spectral! Its on netflix :) it is very good, lots of work put into animation and props and such

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thanks muchly! Have a great day/night.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You too!!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Spectral?

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Yep!!$!

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Show wasn’t too bad

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yeah just a fun b-movie. Not great, not terrible, okay to see once.

Best example of this: Taron, a rollercoaster in Phantasialand, an amusement park in Germany. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SASE7nZuoMU

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

so... is that a rollercoaster that uses sections with magnetic linear acceleration rather than big drop hills?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly! And man, it works. And it has a second accelaration in there as well - totally brilliant!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it looks like it really speeds up during thst straight low section. looks awesome!

The gauss rifle was always my favorite weapon in Fallout 4. A ridiculously big ass gun (with all upgrades) with a ridiculously big ass boom.

I can not read as fast as that last gif thinks I can.

tl;dr for you:

Apply magnets to your eyes and read like a gauss gun

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes you can; don't take the time to read the words in your internal voice. Link to follow...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

https://youtu.be/xQsNMB0b3Nc it's pretty cool to try

Must not use subtitles a lot.

you have to spritz

And I can especially not _understand physics_ as fast as that last gif thinks I can.

Perpetual motion.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

no. As soon as something interacts with the magnet, the magnet starts losing strength.

Magnets

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always thought gauss rifles used elecromagnetic coils to accelerate the projectiles, it appears I was incorrect.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

You were correct in your understanding. The "Gauss Rifle" shown in the second GIF is actually a Newton Rifle, based on Newton's Cradle.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They do in practice because > force,, but this is a simpler version that illustrates same point and the kiddies can do. Or grown ups :)

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

I could never get them to work for me, but I think my issue was a lack of power (figure out capacitors) and too thin of copper wire.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They do, post is a little off and misleading.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

coilguns use rings of conductive material and pulses of high intensity electricity to pull the projectile towards them at high velocity 1/

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Railguns use the projectile to complete an electric circuit, again at high intensity.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Gauss guns/rifles is simply the overarching term for magnetically powered projectile delivery systems.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Username checks out

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gauss rifle is not a well defined term, used more sci-fi. Three most defined techs are: Coilgun, railgun, and magnetic linear accelerator.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

You can have my Gauss rifles when you take them from the smoking heap of my now dead 100 ton AS7-K Atlas Mech!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That'll be a breeze with the 2 heavy Gauss on my Fafnir.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I raise you a Locust with a medium pulse and 2 mgs

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who can't figure out how to play (or fight against) something under 40 tons, that hurts my soul.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude, he's just saying there's different kinds of gauss rifles, that the term is inexact. Think of it like "assault rifle".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Assault rifle is a pretty specific term...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But loaded with unintended meanings, all depending on who's hearing the word. It was specific, it no longer is.

Magnets. How do they work?

8 years ago | Likes 324 Dislikes 13

They have little bits of gravity stored inside.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Magic

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They work because of magnets, duh!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Electrons go around the atom, creating a tiny electromagnet (moving electric charge creates a magnetic field). In some metals 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Iron, Cobalt and Nickel (or alloys of those metals), those little electromagnets align together to create a larger, stronger magnet.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The electricity bits get all spinny and magic comes out.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in the most fundamental way, energy wants to balance out

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Entropy doesn't explain magnets, just that ferromagnets die out over time.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

how not? it is the reason differently charged things attract eachother is because (-1) + (+1) = 0. positive + negative = neutral.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

atleast that it how i thought it works in princible

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Charge is electric, not magnetic. And the fact that the overall charge of the universe is 0 is because of the law of conservation of 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Positive and negative charges attract each other due to the Lorentz force. But when a positive charge and a negative charge get together 1/?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They don't always annihilate. The best example is how protons and electrons are attracted to each other but don't cancel each other out. 2/2

Can we not somehow design these to create perpetual energy generation?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You sir are getting into quantum physics

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Perpetual motion violates all our physics laws, so unlikely.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Friction bro. It ruins everything

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I actually said this while watching all these gifs.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've always liked to believe magnets are the key to perpetual motion

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's always a counterforce. Magnets generating electricity through emf induce a counter-current, causing counter emf, slowing the magnet

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh I know! I never thought I was right, I've just always liked to believe it :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ah, but that pesky friction

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

that's the rub
