Dogs don't have a sense of guilt. They have a sense of impending punishment. They "look guilty" because they think they're in trouble.
patkat1
No eye contact with the humans. They'll never know if we stick to the same story

Could have been either. Dogs don't feel guilt. They feel fear.

Then why are two dogs in the exact same situation showing wildly different reactions?
Bakerysnake
Do Corgi's, Dachsunds, and Basset Hounds suffer from similar health issues?
PhailRaptor
All long dogs have a chance for hip/back issues, but that's not any different from a German Shepard. Corgis can carry a nasty genetic ->
-> disorder, but such individuals are easy to identify because their fur will be more like a Sheltie's. Pembroke Corgis are sorta prone ->
-> to obesity, but that's more of a food in vs activity level issue -- most people don't realize they need LOTS of exercise.
that makes sense, they are, however weirdly enough, working dogs
The dwarfism is intentional from their herding days. Much easier for them to dodge under a kick from a cow.
Illendor
That's actually not how that works. They don't have a concept of good or bad. This is just them being submissive because human is angry.
enferno8
Certainly not an inherent sense of good/bad, but a learned one for sure. My pup won't greet me when she's done something. It's kind of cute.
Do any of us have an inherent sense of good/bad, or did we learn it?
Exactly, it's all learned.
The pup likely also will act like that even if she didn't do the bad thing, causing you to believe she did, reinforcing the behaviour.
What other stimulus would cause her to act that way before seeing me and reading my body language/tone of voice?
Making the connection between "broken thing" and "mom yells at me." My dog will hunker and hide when the CAT breaks shit.
Ok but when my pup is home alone, there's nobody else there to tear up the cardboard box... SHE knows what SHE did BEFORE I return.
