A couple of years ago I got cut off in traffic, had to swerve into a curb to avoid hitting the side of a truck that ripped out in front of me. If I didn't swerve I'd have ended up under his rear tyres before he'd have been able to stop (if he stopped at all). I hit the curb, fractured my skull, and had a concussion. All while riding in a bike lane on my daily commute to work. I went back home that morning and the girlfriend screamed there was so much blood on my face when I walked in

I ride around 1,000 miles/month outdoors during the spring/summer/fall. I get cursed at and called slurs at least twice a week. A few times a month I get a "punishment pass" by some small-dick energy bro in a lifted truck where they drive as close to me as they can. I've followed someone into their church parking lot and let them have it at 9AM on a Sunday morning in front of their congregation. They had the nerve to ask me to not curse at them.

Yup. I've since adjusted my strategy. Though it's hard to quietly accept abuse, especially when I could end up maimed or killed because some chucklefuck thinks it's funny to scare me. My sense of justice demands that they get an ass kicking, but the world doesn't work that way.

This is why I'll continue to ride my bicycle on pedestrian sidewalks over regular traffic streets when available even if it is a ticket-able offense. A car hitting a cyclist is exponentially worse than a bicycle colliding with a pedestrian.

Generally, assault is when you feel threatened that someone is going to cause harm to you. In this case, the driver was threatening to hit them with their car by getting extremely close as a way to intimidate them. The deadly weapon part is the driver using the car because the car can very easily be deadly in this situation.
