I enjoyed many hours on the grounds. I’d use Matthiessen for horseback riding. If I’m not mistaken, Hoover was also turned into horse trails about 20 years ago.
If you’re looking for a secluded place (hard to find any seclusion these days) there’s a place called Mitchell’s Grove maybe about 15 minutes north of Starved Rock. While the scenery pales in comparison to SRSP, there’s hardly any visitors there and you can spend hours there walking the grounds and never see another person.
