Little known fact Nighy would eat 12 octopodes per day (hold the beak) to better prepare for the role. He'd take them inside of a school gym locker half filled with sand, salted water, and old boots. The local school donated their facilities for this use and is now a Disney historic site.

Afterwards they started to go full CGI not motion capture, which is why many modern fight scenes look like plastic toys in zero gravity. Add in the 'capture it on steadycam and slap it together in editing' method instead of properly blocking out scenes and movies look terrible. Its why lower budget movies look better - you have to plan, do it for real, etc.

This is a nonsense comment. Motion capture is used in fully cg shots, and is used in most movies with digital creatures to this day. The zero gravity look is usually because actors were on wires but had to be replaced digitally, but the performance couldn't be changed in order to keep eye-lines and framing. Source: I'm a 20 year VFX veteran.

Pirates of the Carribean showed how it's done damn well. Use physical effects as much as possible and enhance aspects, or go for outright CGI, in cases were physical effects come to their limits.
Unfortunately even with CGI in play, you need to have a direction where to go with it and how to apply it. Something many seem to have forgotten. Not to mention that the CGI team needs time to make it good.

From what I’ve heard it’s not a matter of direction. It’s a matter of price. Good CGI costs money and takes time so productions will either offload some scenes to cheap CGI companies in China or whatever or give them a ridiculously tiny timeframe to do the scene in.
A good example was that one fight scene in one of the Black Panther movies that looks famously shite. Can’t remember which movie that was exactly. I only remember there was a lot of purple and black in that scene if that helps.
