That vacation question seems like an instant bad idea.
Like, by all means come up with a distraction. Making them think up a vacation when they are tired and yearn to relax sounds like it would just make them feel *worse*. Give 'em something real, food, massages, whatever, but vacation talk is best saved for when you can actually deliver.
It's like saying "What kind of cake would you want to eat" and then having no intention to deliver on cake. Most would be at least slightly miffed.

#8 YES. Survival of the fit is puzzle piece fit, not gym fit.
faro2000
Yes, although that's not a quote from Darwin (aged a few months in 1809), but Leon Megginson in the 20th century. "Survival of the fittest" quote is from Herbert Spencer.
I've always used "survival of the best fit" instead. Simple change in words, huge difference in meaning.
Zanzetuken
Not even that though. It literally comes down to how well a species can reproduce. Doesn't matter how well adapted it is to an environment, if a newly evolved species is sterile somehow, there is zero evolutional fitness as the species can't survive.
astrangehop
That's an oversimplification unless you're including longevity and survival. Seagulls live 15 years and lay three eggs a year, but they're everywhere. Sea turtles live to 100 and lay 50-200 eggs per clutch but only 1 in 5000 make it to adulthood so they're in rough shape.
Zanzetuken
I mean yes and no. If an organism lives for 0.1 seconds but can produce 5 million offspring in that time, that would be described as high evolutionary fitness. I see what you're saying though; the sea turtles have a lot more predators on their young, so even though they lay tons of eggs very few survive. Be interesting to see how the survival rate has changed with rising oceans and such, or if there were subspecies that laid eggs closer to the water if they died out because that was worse, etc.

I get your comment more than I get the joke. What does karma have to do with deserts or desserts?
Zanzetuken
"Just desserts" is a phrase meaning getting what's coming to you. Karma has come to mean* getting what's coming to you.
*phrasing this way, as I'm not 100% sure that was the original religious definition of the word
CatShadowleaf
https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/just-deserts-or-just-desserts
Retrikaethan
"getting your just desserts" is a phrase more or less meaning "receiving your comeuppance" which relates to the "karma" name of the jokey restaurant. meme-maker misspelled desserts as deserts lol
Righteousdew
"Just desserts" is a phrase that basically means "you got what you deserved." "Deserts" seems to be a typo.

I no longer remember the maths behind it, but given that I could guess the answer he was going for phonetically, I knew what it was.
aguacatedeldiablo
Same here. I always struggled with the trig identities, but I could at least tell that it *was* a trig identity, and the rest was just fitting in something that made sense.
sacrosanctt
It's pretty straight forward math with some convolutions to make it look more complicated. I'll help you remember.
Right away we can cancel the square and square root out. They are redundant.
Next, 1+tan can be converted to cosines. So we get 1+(sin/cos).
We can then mix the fraction to perform the addition, getting (sin + cos)/cos.
Sine + cosine is known to be 1. So now we have 1/cos.
And 1/cos is equivalent to a secant.
Keeping the algebra variable, we have secC.
aguacatedeldiablo
I always struggled with this stuff. Getting the right conversion to get to the desired end result.
Spiked
Thank you
usernamemorelikeusershame
That's not 1 + sqrt( tan^2(c) ), it's sqrt(1 + tan^2(c) ). You can't cancel the square and square root in this case.
There's also a more direct property you can use, one of the Pythagorean identities: sec^2(c) = 1 + tan^2(c)
∴ sec(c) = sqrt( 1 + tan^2(c) )
The reason you got the answer the way you did is that actually sine + cosine is not actually 1; sine squared plus cosine squared is.
sacrosanctt
You are correct. It seems my own memory of the math was not as complete as i thought it was. Been a few decades since I've had to think about it.
Thank you for your correction.
ProppaGanda
#1 I mean, humans always did weird shit to their bodies. I don't remember which pre-Columbian culture was, but they would carve their teeth. Then there was of course the Chinese mutilation of feet. Japanese blackening of teeth. Europeans using mercury for cosmetics. All just as a display of status.
We are fucked up as a species.
ElmyrDeHory
not us, as a species. only certain individuals, who in certain situations dictate the terms. this is a malfunction. this should disappear, but there is no one strong enough to say that this is bad. what is important, for now, is mapipulating people, to rule by dividing, extreme leftism, extreme rightism, and brainless celebrities!

ProppaGanda
Those two are just well paid guardians of the patriarchal demand.
SpectralSpider
Oh no! Buddy! Do you not know about societal pressure?
Sydonis12
We are not talking about being fit or wearing make up here, the shit they have done was done to chase clout. At a certain point, caving in to societal pressure is on you, especially when the motivation is to stand out.
eventide215
NOBODY pressured them into looking that way.. no normal person wants them that way. You could use societal pressure for more normalized beauty standards not this crap.
Psychobeanz
Let's not forget genital mutilation of girls and women, which is still occurring rampantly in certain African cultures.
silverFox3000
And boys here in the US. What is circumcision, but more genital mutilation
Psychobeanz
I agree. We opted out of circumcision when our son was born.
seoras13
Excuse my ignorance but when you say opted out, that sort of suggests it's going to be done automatically. Is it not that folk opt in. No idea where you're from or how things work there, which is why I am asking this dumb question
onlyhalfghost
at least until quite recently (90s?) if you didn't specifically inform the doctors in the US it *was* automatic.
Psychobeanz
Not a dumb question. It is an optional procedure, so technically you do have to opt in, and my phrasing wasn't correct. However, in communities like mine full of conservative Christians, the majority of people follow tradition and have their boys circumcised.
Psychobeanz
I have to come back to add that my mother gave me so much shit for it. It was bizarre. I never knew my child's penis would matter so much to her.

There's a "condition" that some women get (I've only seen it on women, but maybe men get it too.) in which they grow a mass of fat exclusively in the area in the area from just above their knees to the top of their hips...no lower, no higher. Their knees and below are fine, as are their waists and above. Either of those two may "suffer" from it.

Looks like when beauty standards value both a thigh gap and a thicc butt. So some pay for both.
FiftyShadesOfMascarpone
Right image is photoshopped. Left appears to be someone who calls herself Black Chyna and actually looked like that due to silicone implants and injections. Which she had removed at some point. Apparently it took 8 hours to restore her butt to normal proportions.
