Depending on the wood you're burning, you fire could reasonably get up to 1,000 degrees C. Especially if you're burning stuff like ironwood, hornbeam, or rock maple. That moron is going to burn down that building some day with that sort of stupidity.

In theory a wood fire shouldn't get hot enough to be able to melt steel, but if you give it the right conditions then there is a chance that it would. That is assuming the above is a wood fire and not coal (coal burns a lot hotter). The red/orange glow is fine. The yellow/white at the bottom indicates temp of around maybe 1000-1200C. Melting point of stainless is 1500C. Flying a bit close to the sun for me, but looks worse that it probably is.

What? The theory (adiabatic flame temperature) tells us an air-breathing wood fire can reach nearly 2000°C ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adiabatic_flame_temperature#Common_flame_temperatures ). Iron melts at 1538°C and steel at less (the exact temperature depends on the steel's chemical composition).

That is combustion under ideal conditions. I was talking about a "wood fire" meaning what's in the picture, a bunch of wood stuck in a stove and lit. Now do a web search for "common temperature of wood fire" and tell me any results that are even close to suggesting 2000C. Yes you CAN get a wood fire up to that temp (blacksmithing is a great example) but your plain old wood fire isn't going to get that hot.

it shouldn't as a rule, but a wood fire can definitely make it glow, saw it once at a hunt camp ... one of the guys kept feeding the fire as his bed area was drafty and another guy kept closing the air intake because his bed was close to the fire and was too warm. The conditions were just right that it was glowing and everyone stayed up to make sure nothing nearby caught fire from the radiating heat. One guy lost a pair or boots that melted. Both those guys lost their fire privileges that week.

Think the bag next to it says "smokeless fuel" so I'm guessing charcoal. Would the insulating bricks and shielding be to keep extreme heat from spreading to anything touching that wall?

Yes, insulating bricks will stop the wall from heating up as well as helping to radiate the heat back into the room, which is the same reason it's got that curved plate behind it, to help radiate the heat back into the room. No point heating up the wall, which will in turn just heat up the outside environment. Given this looks like a tin shed/garage then it will be cold normally and pretty much once the fire is turned off will rapidly drop back to outside temperature.

Wood absolutely CAN melt steel, it just requires the correct combination of fuel, air, and geometry. I'm a blacksmith, and I have done this.

Yep, which is why I said "in theory a wood fire shouldn't get hot enough to melt steel". You CAN make one hot enough to melt steel if you want to (as you allude to). Just putting some wood in a stove and letting it burn probably won't meet those conditions though.

It’s mostly due to the camera having limited range - it’s dark, the red is very dim and relatively speaking the “yellow” is blown out. Also might be an older type of digital camera that is sensitive to IR, increasing the “brightness”. Otherwise the yellow portion would the “forge hot” which means it’d be soft enough to deform fairly easily and this would be moments from disaster. Barrels are thin and that chimney is oversized pulling a large draft. But a barrel will glow from just a wood fire.

This helps me understand what is happening so much. My experience as a sculpture student (with welding and bronze/iron casting), and my experience with wood stoves (I’ve lived in 3 houses mainly heated by would stoves over the last 15 years), is all telling me that the firebox is way too small to produce the heat (with wood) to turn a proper wood stove those colors. It’s not 1/4 thick steel, and those colors aren’t “true” on the visible spectrum.

Yeah you can see where the rim is doubled up there’s no color at all. It’s thin. The other hint it’s very brightened (long exposure maybe?) is the shadows are very low contrast despite there being only one main light source. The lower stove window does shed light - you can see it on the floor and the via beam shadow on the floor. We notice that despite the lower 1/4th being the “same” yellow, the beam’s shadow is relatively sharp. If it was all glowing that bright, the shadow would be soft. So /

/ we know the yellow must be blown out overexposed, because the lower window is much brighter than the barrel itself despite the photo making them look identical.

Lastly the blue and green items in the photo look very washed out, which can be the lighting or camera but more likely is post processing to adjust the hue/tint of the image and saturation to bring out the colors of the barrel which would otherwise be much less intense.

Even if it doesn't melt isn't the structural integrity of the metal greatly compromised? I would be more concerned with it collapsing and starting a fire more than it melting.

Yes. Metals as a rule weaken as they get hot, and a rough rule of thumb is that the strength is effectively zero when you've reached 80% of the absolute melting point (ie using Kelvin or Rankine, not Celcius or Fahrenheit). So for iron that'd be about 1450K (≈1180°C), whereas steels can probably start going mushy as early as around 1100K (≈830°C). If the stove here is as hot as it looks (digital photos aren't very reliable) then it may in part be over 1300°C.

Given that it's a beer keg and the walls on them are typically only 1.5mm thick steel, yes, I would tend to agree with you. It will be fine, right up until it's not fine and then you have a 1000C angry mess on the floor.

It's freestanding so no house-burning issues. The over all design is portable and collapsible so buildup isn't an issue. Still, seems like this isn't a solution

I tell people to assume everything in my blacksmith shop is both sharp and hot. Also the number of times I’ve grabbed metal that I know is hot but isn’t glowing is too damn high. Get some fun burn patterns down your fingers/hand though. Weird digital lines that look kinda random until you start closing your hand.
